Lawd Above! Hey, it's da Valucre Blog, Innit.

Wotcha valucre, a 'special' update- this one's for ya (you kna 'oo ya 're).

Blimey! What’s dis, da only tradishunal Valucre blog update fer dis monf is da last fer da month? Well, wiv da Valucre awards, da blog was turned a bi' mixed up, an' given what i' is a short month, we’re back ter da last update ov da monf again- funny 'ow what works out. Nuff said, yeah?

I kid, I kid- no full on updates in rhyming cockney- after a while, it even starts to grate on me a little. Anyway, yes this will be the final update of the month as it so turns out, but we will be back in March with fresh content and more promises for changes that never happen at the pace they are promised (I really have to stop taking my lessons from Tebo ;P ).Lor' luv a duck! All da bollocks aside. Know what I mean--er, all the bullshitting aside, let's get this blog going.

What's Happening Valucre?

The Chosen: Round Three Continues;-;

Veelos Event - Fete Ghede- I feel like I should have covered this ages ago, but we were neck deep in the Valucre awards stuff. Let me start by saying that the amount of work put into this event is just jaw dropping *amazing*. Hats off to those who did all the legwork in planning and development. Anyway, here’s the scoop my readers: Get this, vital port town under limited supervision, unchecked crime still in full force, combined with a new drug, dead magic users and fortune tellers, and the invading presence of a very familiar evil… recipe for disaster? All your missing is a bit spice- oh wait, got that too, in the form of a headless witch given life again who with the aid Pale Kings, looks to burn the city to the ground.

A new drug called Banda is making the rounds, turning ordinary folk into giggling, murderous psychopaths intent on setting everything aflame. The drug-afflicted murderers, who vomit their infected blood into the mouths of others, force  those that declined the drug to join the merriment. Soon, the delirium spreads and even the unwilling are participating in the city’s ruin. Most of the guard is lost, the only hope a small thieves guild holding out against the onslaught. Of course, all this is just the appetizer, a distraction meant to keep you sated while the main course is cooked up. What’s in store for you? Well, let’s just say that D’eon never fails to deliver. Want to play a hero, a bad guy, or just some poor schmuck stuck in the middle? Read up here.

Open Event at the Gaian Academy- Hey, remember how the Gaian academy sort of got destroyed? Yeah, bad times for the academy, but things are looking up now! The academy is getting back up on its feet, kicking off a new year of success, and moving forward. They are opening new expansions and welcoming the new ties with the recently discovered land of Nich’e, where new field trips and other opportunities will come abound. And hey- if you want to be in an RP thread with a half-naked woman running around, you can fulfill your teenage fantasies here. Come back to school- they promise (sorta) you won’t almost die this time.

Idiocrasis- Well, the biggest nerd gathering today for Valucre was Jordan Con, but this might rival that yet- an RP where you play yourself, in that old traditional tavern setting. It’s been tossed around, but the idea looks fun and it’s a good way to chill out with some more casual stuff. Believe it or not, character sheets are a must, but after that, it’s open posting. Put up a bit about yourself (first post of the interest check has a sample) and go join the fun- especially if you miss the IRL meeting opportunities. Click here govna!

Cruise With Sky Pirates- A cruise, a wonderful, pleasant, perfectly ordinary cruise- nothing could ever go wrong. It's not like the captain of this airship is some swarthy swashbuckler looking to rob the passengers blind. It couldn't be that the ship is entirely manned by this pirate crew and everyone on board has been duped into taking a cruise to lighter pockets. No, never could be that you might have an opportunity to get in on a role-play as a passenger or as a pirate, or as a pirate pretending to be a passenger- or perhaps a passenger being a pirate, or best yet, a passenger pretending to be a pirate who is pretending to be a passenger masquerading as a goat milker... wait, I lost track of this. Hey- lots of opportunity to RP here and it involves Sky Pirates- enough said!

Get Ready TerrenusA brand new island is on the way, the name you’ll soon have on the tip of your tongue- San Yara, a recently discovered land by Terrenus traders. Trade agreements were quickly made and this city has been brought into the fold of Terrenus, though its governing of the land is loosely based, given the distance between the island and the mainland. This new land will be unlike anything seen in Terrenus and feature new religion, culture, creatures, politics and more. The land is not fully set up yet, but you can find out more from this thread

Raven's Landing: Stolen Birds- An ill-timed calamity indeed, Raven's Landing has found their best breeding pair of their Ravens, Ospreys, and Crows stolen right out of the rookery. Normally, they would have some foot soldiers hot on the thieves trails, but they picked a poor time for Raven's Landing to have such a calamity- their troops are spread out, defending the shore lines in preparation of a rumored pirate attack, which also required they beef up military presence on shipping vessels. There has been numerous bandit attacks in the outlying areas, and some places further to the northwest required assistance as well- disastrous timing! Some topnotch rewards are offered for this gig, so I highly suggest you get on down and see what you can claim- only a couple spots left!

Featured Read of the Month- I have a good one- nay, a great one for you folks this month. The story is only just beginning to unfold, but already it has begun setting the stage for something bigger to come, all while giving good focus to the unfolding events. It’s definitely one of the best reads I have had in a while and when I say I thoroughly enjoyed it, I mean that I sat here eating it up. Wish the thread had more posts to it, but I suppose like any good story that is in progress, I will have to wait for the continuing updates. One of the three writers of this one is a blog regular, but he’s definitely not the only one bringing powerhouse writing to this thread- all three are fantastic.

Congratulations to Discord, King, and The Hummingbird for being the authors’ of this month’s featured thread!

Of Monsters and Men

The thread starts out with King’s character conversing with an NPC while watching the slave auctions, waiting for a prime sample to it the block. The conversation halts abruptly when a new slave is brought out, one who fights back defiantly and spits in the NPC’s face. As it turns out, this one is a former Edgemaster (The Hummingbird) and still feisty as can be, a prize among slave masters looking for one they can ‘break-in’ themselves. Elijah (King) marks this slave as his chosen product, sealing the deal with a ‘kiss’. It is about then that the business associate, a succubus, comes in and steals the attention of everyone male. She turns heads and intoxicates everyone with her presence, drastically shifting how everyone behaves.

The auction of the former edgemaster begins, leading to record highs on the bids, everyone intent on claiming this one for their own. Melkavia (The succubus, by Discord) uses her innate talents to twist a man into buying the slave for them. The edgemaster purchased and now in their possession, Elijah takes the man back to their dwelling, where he is introduced to the already broken and trained slaves of the household. Elijah decides not to waste time, getting acquainted with his new piece of property by starting off with some torture that in this world of the damned- is a form of shaking hands.

Ripping off his thumbnail.

This story has only just begun, but the writing is stellar- make sure to check it out.

Closing Thoughts?

Courage.

You might be asking yourself right about now- hey, what does this have to do with writing?

Everything of course.

It takes courage to begin seriously working on that novel of yours, and it takes even more to tackle the long an arduous process of editing the damn thing. It takes courage to face this thing before you, to wrestle it into submission and put something that flows on paper. Talking about writing and courage is something that could go on for pages upon pages, so doing that today is not my goal (nor something I would want to do in a single writing session). Instead, let’s think about daring to write, even when you know it sucks.

Okay, maybe it doesn’t ‘suck’, but I bet even in your least frustrated moments, even when you feel ‘okay’ about your writing (do us writers ever feel that way?) you could name dozens of people who are better than you. You will have an easier time naming off a dozen people who outclass you by miles than you will naming published authors you feel you outdo in quality (okay, E.L James is a given). When we get to thinking about the giants in the world of writing, it’s easy to get intimidated, dismayed, frustrated by how far behind you are.

Temptation burns, and soon that acid in the back of your throat becomes a constant reminder of your desire to quit. The question is- are you going to pop a tums and then grin and bear it, or are you going to throw in the towel and call the quits?

Quitting is easy, oh so easy. All you got to do is just relinquish the effort, ignore the urge, and despite how consuming and maddening it is, that urge will go silent, when put off enough. Sure, it might kick and scream for a while, but if you smother it with a pillow, soon all you’re left with is this twitching body- and hey, twitching isn’t so hard to ignore. Quitting is easy, but finishing- well now, that’s the trick.

Practice courage- the courage to suck, to be leagues behind the best writers and those you emulate and respect. Have the courage to hold yourself to compare yourself to their level and fall far short, that next level seemingly miles away. Have that courage to keep writing, keep getting back up, brushing off the dust and going back to working on that story, because that story is –your- story. Who else can tell it but you?

Sure, the writing you put out might not be great- and it will never be the best. Because there can only be ‘one best’ and when you account for billions of people writing throughout this day and age and all of history- the odds are so abysmally tiny that you’ll be the one, you need to toss out that notion now. You will never be the best. You’ll most likely never reach the level of ‘amongst the greatest’- but perhaps you can be good. Perhaps you can be great- but no matter where you land, the stories you write will be that unique part of -you-.

There will be a uniqueness to those characters and tale that come from you, genuine work that is all your own and not borrowed from elsewhere. That’s the material we want, that’s what we need to see. Don’t be afraid to dig down deep, into the darkest reaches of yourself and give to the world those unique tales. This is courage in writing- being okay with mediocrity and that constant battle to improve, that long lasting journey towards being okay, or decent, and perhaps- just maybe great. That journey is long and hard, but it starts with being brave.

Being okay with failing.

Being okay with sharing the most vulnerable parts of yourself.

This is your craft, this is your work, but if you have something important enough to you to be shared and told, make sure that the story never goes unheard.

Have courage.

And if you struggle at first- its okay, keep pushing, keep growing. This entry is as much for all of you as it is for me. We're in this together- let's take this journey and go.

Stay writing my friends.

-          Acies

"Start telling the stories that only you can tell, because there’ll always be better writers than you and there’ll always be smarter writers than you. There will always be people who are much better at doing this or doing that — but you are the only you.Neil Gaiman

The 2013 Valucre Awards!

Howdy Valucre!

We finally draw to a close this year’s Valucre awards. The process certainly had its share of controversy, but in the end, the lists of finalists rounded out with some very well qualified people—honestly, I think that’s what counts the most. Honestly, this last vote turned out a bit skimpy in comparison to the poll voting, which makes me wonder if it was lack of advertising or burnout that resulted- we’ll have to find that out later on. Rather than dwell on what could have happened better (we’ll hash that out soon enough), let’s get down to giving some props to our candidates for this year’s categories.

As one might expect, not everyone who voted chose to vote in every category. With the data this generates, I’m going to present the awards in the order of ‘least popularly voted’ to ‘most popularly voted’ as the order. How that starts- well, you’ll see that in just a moment! Obviously, Fan Favorites will round out the end list, as we had a turnout of 37 votes for Fan Favorites this year- Fantastic! (Ba dum psh).

Alright, useless commentary and bad jokes aside, I present to you your 2013 Valucre Awards!

Valucre's Most Improved

This one was no contest- no contest at all. The original plan was to have the members give us a few nominations and then have a few dedicated staff go look through these nominees oldest posts of 2013 and their newest posts of 2013, to determine which among them had the greatest amounts of improvement. Well, you guys went and made it easy- only one name was brought forth and it is indeed a good one. Without further ado, your 2013 most improved player is:

 Congratulations BRS, keep improving!

Hero of the Year

The vote for hero was a close one- so darn close that the winner one by just one vote! We had two candidates here pull ahead, but only one managed to rise above, proving to be the hero of 2013. The candidates were:

Jericho Joshua Jordan, co-founder of the Justice Group!

Syven Lillis De'Virisario: Orisia’s Head of Defense!

Theoren Valkien: A truly ‘Fabulous’ Hero and Friend!

And your 2013 Hero of the Year is…

Theoren Valkien!

Congratulations on your win!

Role-Player of the Year

This one too ended up close, with three candidates rushing for the title and one coming out over top- also by a single vote (there are many close votes this year), breaking the expectation that this one might be ran away with. This achievement is designed to recognize the Role-playing endeavors of an individual as rising above all the rest. Certainly, all four of these nominees qualified as fantastic contributors to Valucre’s RP scene.

                        Aleskei!

                        King!

                        Pasion Pasiva!

                        Supernal!

And your 2013 Role-Player of the year is…

Congratulations on your win!

Role-Play of the Year

Something that never ceases to amaze me is the sheer volume of great role-play Valucre puts out every day, all year long. The threads that made it above the cut are definitely some fine contenders, but only one could be called this year’s ‘Best Role-Play’. This one was one of our more definitive votes, with the favorite leading a bit more strongly. Let’s see who made it to the top.

                        A Ship Towards Orisia!

                        Dupes of Imposture!

                        The Regent Kicks Back!

                        The Tea Party!

This year’s Role-Play of the year is…

The Tea Party

Congratulations Orisia (this is their second win in a row)!

Best New Member of 2013

We recruited many new faces this year, and many of them went on to be excellent, productive members. Speaking honestly, I think I saw more talented new members join us this year than I had in any other year.  While we could compile quite the list of impressive new faces, we managed to get this down to four nominees, and only one managed to make it to the top in another close contest (winning by just one vote). Your nominees and winner of the 2013 Best New Member Category:

                        Bradapalooza

                        Die Shize

                        PandaHat

                        Refrigerator

And the winner is…

Congratulations on the win!

Best Villain of 2013

The progenitor of controversy, this category got a lot of attention, grabbed most votes among the polls and had most views here on the blog! In the end, only one of these shady characters could reach the top, doing so by just one vote as well! Who were the most dastardly of 2013? Who managed to push his way to the top? Let’s look:

Alexander Endriel- The Witch King Anew!

Farkis Marisante- Terrenus’ most prolific terrorist!

                        Resurgence- Murderer of Royalty!

                        Roen- The Devil Himself!

And, your winner of Villain of 2013, by just one vote…

Alexander Endriel!

Congratulations on your win!

Fan Favorites of 2013

And now finally, the fan favorites.

Unlike the other contests, this one ends with seven total winners instead of just one absolute best. By the closing of the voting, we had exactly seven people who stood above the rest, making the process work out exactly as we hope. There was one clear first place winner who had just shy of over half the people vote for him (seriously!), followed by three tied at second and three tied at 5th. The winners are presented in order of placement, then alphabet. Votes compiled came in through the thread and a couple sets through PM.

If you are curious about how close you came to making the list, you can PM me or contact me over Yim. The 5th-7th place finishers had 8 votes.

I present your 2013 Fan Favorites!

Congratulations to the fan favorites! Congratulations to The Hummingbird on her second win, Praetorian and King on their second wins and second in a row, and to Supernal and Acies for three wins in a row. Congrats to Aleskei and Pasion Pasiva on their first ever wins!

The Closeout

This concludes the 2013 awards for Valucre. It’s good to see some fine folks out there getting recognition for the hard work they put out, and I hope it encourages them to keep providing quality works and encourages others to work towards reaching those same levels. As in life, not everyone can be a ‘winner’ at everything they do, but regardless if you lost it here or even if you didn’t quite make the list, take pride in the work you do, and keep putting out the best product you can. Maybe you have not yet achieved a level where many others notice, but it does not mean that you have gone unnoticed by everyone, nor does it mean that what you do does not matter. All it means is that you should keep –making- that effort.

Anyway, I wanted to take a moment in these closing thoughts not to do my usual semi-coherent rambling on some topic that strikes my fancy in the moment. Instead, I’d like take a moment to thank those who also make up the backbone of this site, contributing awesome role-play and lore, but did not make the nomination list for RPer of the year and have been with us for more than a year. That list was already rather extensive, and I suspect in the coming revisions, it will be even more exclusive next year. If you contribute to activity, lore, plots, or in any other capacity to the Role-Play scene, this nod’s for you. I would list you all out individually, and even went and started it, before I realized I was getting one heck of a long list, and the odds I missed some important peeps will increase as the list get’s longer. I don’t want to accidently leave anyone out and make it feel like a slight- so please, if you RP steadily here or provide in other ways to Valucre’s RP-

Accept my sincerest thanks.

Until next year!

  • Summary: A Ship Towards Orisia features a lineup of newer members putting a vampiress on the run in the company of a cowboy bounty hunter and a snarky pirate—almost sounds like the makings of a bad anime, but hear this one out. This RP takes some odd archetypes and puts together a story that flows easily, balances action and dialogue, and has plenty of laughs thanks to the comic relief provided by Suta. Later additions to the cast add more dimension to the tale and overall- this is an impressive RP.

The story starts with Diego having a flirty evening with Antika, and she lures him off to try and talk him into a little necking. He declines such an offer with a firm no, but not much can come of that altercation, since they are first interrupted by a smart-mouthed pirate who intended to rob the pair but found the awkward situation a bit of a turnoff for moonlight pillaging. The exchange nearly goes volatile, but enter a new conflict where the newest additions actually want to kill someone- it ends well though.

After explanations and payment, Antika, her servant, and the odd duo board a ship bound for Orisia. Sanu displays his commendable sea legs by promptly falling on his arse, recovering just in time to go flirt with the only present living female. Another assailant after two parties does battle with Diego in a match of bullets versus magic, explosions included. The noise brings out a few stowaways who end up found by Antika’s servant.

Later, everyone meets at dinner, and one guest decides to carve a bit of vampire instead of meat, and well, that went over as well as expected. Thing settle down, with the knife happy lass under control, Sanu still having no luck with the ladies, and Diego nursing some serious anger. Throw in a ninja-ginger whose motivation is unknown, and a pair of brothers whose relationship is fun to follow, and you have the end of a thread leading into a sequel.
Why Should You Vote for it: It might not feature a 'star studded cast' but there is some fine RPing here with a solid story and good character portrayals. The shout-out has to go to Suta here though, for this this was a movie, there would definitely be a nod for Best Supporting Actor.

  • Summary: Dupes of Imposture is the story of an unlikely trio of heroes coming together to stop a great evil facing Dougton- true to that 1950’s horror movie fashion, this is a story about body snatchers at their worst, taking over a city, involving the use of tentacles (*shudders*). While the concept is perhaps a bit of a classic, this thread provides plenty of fresh material through seasoned RPers producing fantastic- and often hilarious- material. Want to know about the legendary octopus-ham? Yeah, read on.

The thread starts out with Noel, a young man afflicted with a fraternally based inferiority complex, putting up a notice requesting aid in recovering a kidnapped wife. The way that half of its text is crossed out and revised might explain why only one person responded to the ad- young Preston, a lad with a lisp and an endearing desire to be a hero. Shortly after, an herb smoking Coconio Synchro-shaman joins, and despite misgivings of each other, decides to go forward with the plan to subdue the Gnomish housewife.

The original plan to subdue her with Noel’s magic (while Preston distracted her) backfired when the Shaman’s octopus head (previously thought an ugly hat) opens its eye, startling Noel. The spell hits everything, producing enough tentacles to make the quota for the next three years of smutty anime, as well as giving life (and tentacles) to condiments and a ham. The woman gets away, leaving behind a brood for Noel and Preston to find. Etan (the shaman) goes after her while the other two destroy the brood. The ham, meanwhile, sets out on a quest to feed everyone, building a legend.

The three eventually reunite while Etan battles the woman, who through spiritual connection based magic is revealed to actually be alive, shoved into the back of the gnomish woman’s mind. After battle, the parasite bails from the woman and makes it to the sewer, where it infects a rat. The town is alerted to strange happenings and likens it to a terrorist threat caused by an unnatural- with Noel possibly involved.

    This thread is still ongoing.
Why Should You Vote for it: A star studded cast with certainly memorable characters who are all fun to read in their own way. Adding to that is a genuinely creepy tale balanced out with hilarious complications provided by Desolate- you’ll really enjoy the bit about the condiments.

  • Summary: The Regent Kicks Back is one of those threads where you read it, and you try to make sense of it, and your brain just refuses to do it—and I mean that in the best way. Entertaining because of how random it is, the one you expect to be the straight man is nearly as off-kilter as the clearly mentally-ill character. This is a rollercoaster ride of strange.

The RP starts out with the new regent (Seras) having to clean himself up for the first time in a long time- and it is implied that it might have been a decade (you wonder how he got the gig). He starts his day pestering guards and stealing clothes. Meanwhile, a woman (Kaori) runs through the crowded streets, stomping on people’s feet with stiletto, she hell-bent on recovering her lost love- a ball of rubber-bands. She ends up lying in the dirt.

Dastino, seeing the woman on the ground, thinks to help her. For his efforts, she stabs him in the hand with a hidden dagger, pissing him off and causing him to cuss her out. The regent, taking this the wrong way, grabs the man and threatens him, demanding he apologize to her. All the while, a demoness (Xu) stands by, watching curiously.

Dastino refuses, and Kaori demands he be put into her service for a week of washing her feet. The Regent declares that there will be no slavery, giving an impassioned speech. Dastino points out that he had just made threats against him, but the Regent coolly plays it off as ‘wanting to be friends’ and invites the lot back to his place.

At the mansion, Kaori suddenly proposes, and surprisingly, the Regent agrees- only to stop and ask what her name is. It does not stop the engagement and some sort of (drugged) wine is brought out shortly thereafter. The Demoness makes her reasons for being there known- offering services for an unstated price. Karori gets out of control again, but the Regent puts her out, and leaves to attend to her.

    It’s a strange thread.
Why Should You Vote for it: This is a particularly bizarre thread, but things go together in a way that suggests there will be branching stories coming from this, so not only do you get a read that will leave you dumbfounded, but one that leaves you wondering what comes of all this.

  • Summary: The Tea Party is an event thread surrounding the birthday party for Raspberry Dugrace, an extravagant affair held under an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ theme, specifically ‘A Mad Tea Party’. This is a very long thread with a lot of subtleties to it that will require readers to pay close attention to appreciate all that was taking place- there were threads that spun directly off this one. To give a straightforward summary of this thread is not feasible, given its size, so I am going to have to write this loosely.

The RP starts out with everything set up and a very excited little girl waiting for the arrival of entertainers and guests, discussing how much different being six is from being seven. Her sister Dollya sits to the side, brooding. The first entertainer to arrive is the mad-hatter, who picks up right where the discussion on ages ended. Soon, Zenahriel arrives, presenting a pony- it creates quite the stir. Shortly after, the caterpillar shows, smoking something foreign. True to the white rabbit’s fashion, the one playing the white rabbit is also late, and makes a production of it.

The Queen of Hearts makes her appearance as well, following her classic pursuit of other people’s heads. Leo the Knight shows, and shortly after, the March Hare in a particularly off-putting costume shows up, giving little Raspberry the gift of a gnasher egg, disguised as decoration. A little later there is a Cheshire cat, whose appearance is brief, as well as the Dormouse. Topaz and her strange puppet makes a showing too. Other knights come too, as well as the older brother and eventually the captain of the guard.

What all happened? Gifts were given, a woman was molested at the table, seats were switched and songs were sang. Dollya got high and fondled the March Hare, only to turn vicious later. An argument broke between Dollya and her love interest and so she storms off. The March Hare eloquently requests he be excused to use the facilities, and in doing so, a servant and a squire go missing. A fight nearly breaks out, and many little plots are started.

There is much more, but I hit the word limit.
Why Should You Vote for it: This role-play brought together many talented writers and in the scope of a birthday party either laid out or eluded to plots that involve Orisia, Genesaris, and even to some degree Terrenus. What should strike the reader in this thread is the subtly presented and how unaware parties were of others darker motivations. The thread comes back with humorous moments, particularly surrounding the more eccentric Alice in Wonderland characters.

Valucre Presents

~Your 2013 Hero of the Year Finalists~

(The nominees and their nominators were asked to provide feedback on the following questions with 200 words or less responses. The following is for your voting consideration.)

Jericho Joshua Jordan

From the Nominator

1. Why did you nominate this person?

A. Jericho is a fun read and an interesting guy. He combines wholesome simplicity with a desire to be heroic, thus bucking those tired clichés about knights in shining armor or the newer ‘dark and disgruntled’ archetype that gets thrown around a lot these days.

2. What are some specific exploits of note? What do you feel that the people need to know before going in to vote?

A. He helped found the Justice group, assisted in saving Firemoor, and most recently he began taking on (finalist for villain '13) Roen and company

3. Have a favorite post by this person that comes to mind? Please give me a link!
A.  One I can think of right off would be this one.

4. What about this post makes it your favorite one involving this character?
A. Not necessarily a favorite, but just a good illustration of the complexity of the character, the way he perceives the world and how he interacts with others. You get many of his dimensions all at once.

5. You have a cat stuck in a tree. Tell us in detail how you think this hero would rescue this cat, in the most flamboyant and 'hero-like fashion'?

A. Well, Jericho is a simpler type and probably wouldn't need none of that fancy stuff to help the poor kitty out of the tree- why, all he would need to do is use his ‘jump good’ ability to get right up in there and help the little guy back down. It would be just as easy as that!

From the Hero Himself
1. Please give us a summary of what you did/accomplished this year.

A. I feel like I've done a thing or two here or there but probably the best thing I've done that wasn't a function of one of my own storylines but my engaging in someone else's was rescuing the village/town of Firemoor
Basically, they were being haunted by some guy that went around killing and murdering people and on his final day alive used his death as a focus to curse the town.

Most recently though is I put together a small band of good guys, calling us Justice, and going after the heads of all the villains that got something to say about it. These awards might help us pick targets actually! With wanting to play out the establishment of the group and the research of information to apply to our first target, his extermination isn't done yet, but in my post on the 4th page of Hail to the Glorious Contenders, I kill 46/50 of Roen's Roanist Knights.

That's something. 2014 will be an even better year now that we've gotten started.

2. Please tell us why you feel you have earned this award.

A.  A hero doesn't do things for awards or recognition. Or not always anyway. If a hero did do things for awards and recognition but those things were all heroic, why not I suppose. For my own case, a little while ago I decided that people needed help and that if no one else was going to do it then fine, I'd be the one /shrug. If you're handing out medals for that, I'll take one.

3. Your character ate something bad for lunch and has gas. He’s in a crowded elevator when he can’t help but let one go- and oh boy it reeks. Is your character taking credit for the stink, blaming it on someone else, or casting blame on the service dog in there with you. Justify their actions too!

A. Heck yeah I'll take credit for the stink, and I'll make sure everyone knows about it too! Now I'll try and help myself so as not to subject people to my misgivings and all, but if it can't be helped it can't be helped, and damned if I'm going to be ashamed for a consequence of an involuntary biological process!!!

Syven Lillis De'Virisario

From the Nominator

1. Why did you nominate this person?

A. Often, people measure heroes by the size of their individual deeds, or some defining moment. In doing this, we often overlook the great accomplishments of those who do not have some singular pivotal moment, but a collection of great acts that achieve greatness. Such is the case for Syven, whose contributing works towards the improvement of Orisia’s defenses is not only commendable- it’s flat out amazing (both from the character perspective and from how much work the player put into designing it). Following the chain of gut wrenching terrorist attacks against Orisia, Syven has taken it upon himself to see that nothing like that ever happens again.

2. What are some specific exploits of note? What do you feel that the people need to know before going in to vote?

A. Well, as I mentioned above, hands down it is the defenses for Orisia that are going up. Specifically, you can look into this thread for the final layout, and look into this thread to get a feel for some of the process that went into designing this thing from an IC perspective.

3. Have a favorite post by this person that comes to mind? Please give me a link!
A. This one in particular has a great deal of potency to it.

4. What about this post makes it your favorite one involving this character?
A. It reinforces that drive to do whatever it takes to bring safety to the people.

5. You have a cat stuck in a tree. Tell us in detail how you think this hero would rescue this cat, in the most flamboyant and 'hero-like fashion'?

A. The first thing Syven would need to know is the height of the tree, it’s circumference, relative mass, distance from the nearest structure, and its age. He would also need the current weather, historical weather patterns and predicted weather for the next twenty-four hours. At this time, knights could be stationed at varying points for crowd control and to keep any stray dogs from entering the scene. A pavilion needs to be stationed within 100 yards of the tree, for easy access to plans and mobile office supplies, as well as a cot- they might be here for a while.

The best engineers in the kingdom will be sent for, offered lavish incentives to hurry to the battlefield and begin work on an apparatus that will allow for the safe extradition of the feline stuck in the tree. Extensive blueprints will be drawn and as tensions rise, archers might be secretly stationed nearby as well. Hopefully, this operation will be completed in a safe and efficient manner, in no more than 72hrs.

From the Hero Himself

1. Please give us a summary of what you did/accomplished this year.

A. Responded to a crazed cousin of the Queens that crashed a tea party. Conducted the war games in hopes to increasing the proficiency level of Orisia's leadership. Developed a comprehensive security plan that acts as an IC mechanic as well as a canon enforcement tool. Threatened a Highlord of Genesaris. Is the leader of Orisia's special forces team.

2. Please tell us why you feel you have earned this award.

A.  Honestly I probably haven't.

3. Your character ate something bad for lunch and has gas. He’s in a crowded elevator when he can’t help but let one go- and oh boy it reeks. Is your character taking credit for the stink, blaming it on someone else, or casting blame on the service dog in there with you. Justify their actions too!

A. Since there is no specification on how loud the fart was, I'll assume it was a silent one. (Silent ones are deadly, this is science fact) He wouldn't say anything or acknowledge it. Whoever smelt it, dealt it.

Theoren Valkien

From the Nominator

1. Why did you nominate this person?

A.  Because well, Theoren calmed down an aggravated assassin in this thread.

2. What are some specific exploits of note? What do you feel that the people need to know before going in to vote?

A. He also aided greatly in the quest BAR FIGHT. I feel like people need to know that no matter what sort of help Theoren is giving, be it fashion advice, brute force, or being all dragony, he does it for the good of his friends.

3. Have a favorite post by this person that comes to mind? Please give me a link!

A. Not particularly, no.

4. What about this post makes it your favorite one involving this character?

A. NA

5. If you were somehow locked in dark room with this character for which you had no escape, what do you think would happen, and how would you react to finding yourself in such a state? :P

A. He'd probably turn into a dragon for the sake of pure extravagance, then take it to a bar and maybe tell a story that contains obstacles to the cat's rescue including trolls, the tallest mountains in the world, and perhaps saving a damsel or two on the side.

(I'm bad at answering questions, kill me.) --> Editor's Note: No, you are not bad at answering questions and none of us want anyone to kill you. You're answers suffice just fine and we appreciate your time in humoring us. ;)

From the Hero Himself

1. Please give us a summary of what you did/accomplished this year.

A. Aside from bringing fabulosity, style and refinement, Theoren defeated a time shifting pirate, defeated a raging Kraken, and he is currently residing in Adaviel as Queen Kasha's protector. Securing Adaviel's defenses, he continues to be their ageless guardian against times of strife. Taking up the role as Loremaster, he also secures Adaviel's history and aids travelers seeking knowledge. Traveling across the landscape, he is the shield that will defend any mortal in need of assistance.

2. Please tell us why you feel you have earned this award.

A.  Whether he responded to friends in peril, or to defend against enemies, Theoren accomplished staying true to himself and his ways. Theoren is pretty much a true hero, especially when you see so many hero characters that change their status, or alignment. In any given situation, he will put his comrades safety first, regardless of their past history, or alignment. His concern is preserving life and healing the sick.

3. Your character ate something bad for lunch and has gas. He’s in a crowded elevator when he can’t help but let one go- and oh boy it reeks. Is your character taking credit for the stink, blaming it on someone else, or casting blame on the service dog in there with you. Justify their actions too!

A. What is that wretched stench? Eue de skunk? The assault was greater than the Kraken attacking the small sailing ship. Searching for the offender, Theoren spritzed the mortals with a fragrance of flowers, spices and bergamot. Shielding himself, he forced the fart cloud to bounce against the barrier. Sighing in relief, he went about his business.

So who will it be? Three candidates, all of them heroic in their own right- it comes to you, the voters, to decide who made out as the best hero of 2013.

Jericho: Jericho takes simplicity and an earnest desire to be a hero and makes into something charming and fun to follow. He may not be a knight in shining armor sort (unlike the next two) but he is a hero nonetheless.

Syven: Some heroes are measured by the greatness of a singular, memorable deed (or two), and some are known for the greatness in which the carry themselves at all times- this is certainly true of Syven, a hero of everyday.

Theoren: Perhaps a bit untraditional, Theoren makes being a hero not look easy, but simply fabulous- who says that heroics as to be all dirt and grit? He saves the day and makes everyone look better for it as well.

Valucre Presents

~Your 2013 Villain of the Year Finalists~

[The nominees and their nominators were asked to provide feedback on the following questions with 200 words or less responses. The following is for your voting consideration.]

Alexander Endriel

From the Nominator Agent

Why did you nominate this person?

Ty was the most active, the most successful, the most infamous, and the most memorable Villain of 2013. I'm not going to pretend I nominated him, because I couldn't and didn't need to- when he wasn't nominated by the staff*, Valucre demanded he be put on that list, because its his award to win.

*Editor's Note: The nomination process was chosen by boardleaders, not staff. While some boardleaders are staff, not all boardleaders are staff, just as while some staff are boardleaders, not all staff are boardleaders. Alexander was nominated to the lists via the 'Write-In' option system.

What are some specific exploits of note? What do you feel that the people need to know before going in to vote?

In a continent that canonically boasts the most powerful military in Valucre, Ty's Alexander conquered nearly half of its landmass before setting his sights on its cities. He's currently in the process of burning Biazo to the ground in Thy Master's Bidding, he claimed the largest mountain in Valucre and established his fortress there, and he has merged his spirit with Terrenus' oldest foe- the Witch King Zengi. If the Dominion continues through 2014 uncontested, Terrenus very well may become front lawn of Alexander Endriel.

I believe he already has someone in mind to mow it.

Whispers in the Mountains: Post #15

What about this post makes it your favorite one involving this character?

This post typifies Alexander's personality, which is why I like it so much. The dead are as much tools as the living to him, explaining his complete lack of reverence. He walks with both eyes forward, and spares nothing.
If you were somehow locked in dark room with this character for which you had no escape, what do you think would happen, and how would you react to finding yourself in such a state?
I think that when he found out the room had no exit, he'd get pissed and make one, and I'd die in the blast. If I didn't, I'd probably still need to change my drawers.

From the Villain Himself

Please give us a summary of what you did/accomplished this year.

My character conquered a vast majority of territory on the continent of Terrenus. As it now stands, he is in control of: Blaurg MountainForbidding Hills, Dark ForestHell's Gate (by proxy), and a minor, but growing, segment of The Cedars. He also launched a full-scale assault against the city of Biazo, and will be in control of that entire island soon. He is also managed to seek out the disembodied spirit of Zengi, the Witch King of lore, and successfully merge to become current day Witch King.

Please tell us why you feel you have earned this award.

I think this question would be better answered by those who voted for me and have read my work, or more specifically, those who have engaged my character in some manner. All I can say is that I've worked hard to push Alexander's story since he was created, turning him into the monster (literally, not figuratively) that he is; it's been a very enjoyable three-year journey.

Starbucks got your coffee wrong- what evil thing might your character do in response?

He would probably kill every member of staff in the store, and the next six generations of their family, enslaving their souls to his will for eternity so that they would have ample time to practice making his coffee correctly.

Farkis Marisante

From the Nominator

Why did you nominate this person?

I was originally stuck between nominating either Alexander or Farkis for Terrenus's Villain, and ultimately chose Farkis because although they both effected a great deal of influence and damage on the nation and neither had closed threads per say, Farkis's threads and plots were AGGRESSIVELY open. This happened more with Alexander in the later quarter of 2013 but had always been Farkis's MO with himself and with OiC. All of his attacks on major cities were open and announced in the water cooler, and his own personal attack on one of the cities had people bidding large sums of VB for rewards and counter-rewards for people that aided or impeded Farkis.

What are some specific exploits of note? What do you feel that the people need to know before going in to vote?

The creation of OiC, management of Paradise, the various attacks on cities (Casper, Hell's Gate, Ignatz I think, Weland I think as well)

Have a favorite post by this person that comes to mind? Please give me a link!

Not any one in particular but the IC thread I mention in question 1 is this one: Derailing Weland

What about this post makes it your favorite one involving this character?

See above.

If you were somehow locked in dark room with this character for which you had no escape, what do you think would happen, and how would you react to finding yourself in such a state? :P

I think if Farkis didn't kill me out of apathy or (unfounded) suspicion, I would try to make him interested in getting the fuck out of whatever dark room we were locked in (assuming I couldn't just walk out). Like I'd try to make it interesting for him and self-serving so that when he blows a hole in the place (assuming as well I know what he's capable of) and flies away towards a setting rainbow-sun, I can just follow in his wake and GTFO. I would also try to get him to give me super or magical powers somehow.

From the Villain Himself

Please give us a summary of what you did/accomplished this year.

Attacked Ignatz, Casper, and a cookie cutter village all in an attempt to capture a peacekeeper... that never showed up out of fear!(maybe) Framed Genesaris for a terrorist attack. Destroyed critical infrastructure disrupting commerce and decreasing military power. Handed Hostage (Eustace Monroe) over to the Dominion. Molested another players character. (That's evil right?)(Could also probably take some credit for OiC's 2013 missions)

Please tell us why you feel you have earned this award.

Because.... I've got nothing for this one.

Starbucks got your coffee wrong- what evil thing might your character do in response?

Farkis would never be caught dead in a starbucks, he isn't a ..... anyway. We'll go with pop the barista's eye out and pour the coffee into her empty socket until a new cup of coffee was made. The process would repeat itself until all possible coffee options had been exhausted. He'd then ensnare multiple people's minds and force them to bite off chunks of one another's flesh and paint the starbuck's walls with their blood. (Cuz starbuck is tacky!) After awhile he'd go to Dunkin Donuts to get a real cup of coffee.

Roen

From the Nominator

Why did you nominate this person?

I enjoy the way he portrays this character through his writing, mixing elements of humor and being terrifying. He went on to stab the black queen (Gabriella).

What are some specific exploits of note? What do you feel that the people need to know before going in to vote?

He attempted to murder the Queen of Orisia in a moment of rage.

Pseudomonarchia Diablous

What about this post makes it your favorite one involving this character?

The audacity...

If you were somehow locked in dark room with this character for which you had no escape, what do you think would happen, and how would you react to finding yourself in such a state? :P

I hope I have a 6pack of beer handy and catch him in a good mood. He'd be fun to drink with. Otherwise, I sure hope I didn't piss him off...

From the Villain Himself

Please give us a summary of what you did/accomplished this year.

I've done nothing to justify being called Villain of the Year, not when there are other, more deserving candidates. Not that I know who they are. Regardless, what have I done this year? I think I've had a hand in the downfall of Marlboro Keep. I'm not sure. I'll be honest, I was/am more preoccupied and interested in Orisia, budding flower it is.

Please tell us why you feel you have earned this award.

I said it before, so I'll say it again: I don't think I'm very deserving. Don't misconstrue practicality for humility, because we all know I've not a shred of it. No, I'm saving the awards some face when I say I haven't done nearly enough to deserve Villain of the Year. To those I call fellow candidates, I salute you. I'm sure you're all a bunch of evil bastards. To those who voted for me, I love you. No doubt you wish to see more from the devil.

Starbucks got your coffee wrong- what evil thing might your character do in response?

So, my character's coffee is botched at a local Starbucks. They've either put too much milk or not enough sugar, whatever. He's going to talk to management and imply heavily that incompetence wears green aprons. They can say goodbye to any gratuities. A new cup of coffee will suffice. .

Resurgence

From the Nominator

Why did you nominate this person?

[Editor's Note: Pulled from the Awards 2013 Thread. Also, Dollya's death is complete.] Resurgence killed Dollya, or is about to, which will in turn awaken Orisia's magic, which is a huge deal for my little island. This thread is also not random, he used Resurgence in the Tea Party thread and set up his infiltration. His character has been plotting and fucking with Orisia for a long time--you can look back at The Masquerade and the fact that he started the zombie outbreak in Orisia back in 2012 [I think].

From the Villain Himself

Please give us a summary of what you did/accomplished this year.

He took full control of Coastal Grande through a series of cleverly laid out murders, framed innocents and altered records, installing a puppet as a people’s choice. He raped and eviscerated a young teenage girl and framed an ambassador of Ashville, who the father subsequently killed in a murder-suicide (hope of economic relations are ruined).

Resurgence infiltrated the tea-party as The March Hare. He murdered a servant and kidnapped a squire. He took Dollya by surprise and forced her to watch him rip out the squire’s teeth and then force the boy tofellate him. He anally-raped the squire and consumed his soul, effectively leaving him in a lobotomized state, where his memories haunt his nightmares. Resurgence humiliated and ravaged Dollya, biting off her lip, manually stimulating her until she reached forced orgasm, (emphasizing that she took greater pleasure from his touch over her lover's), sodomized her with a dagger, ripped out her eyes while she screamed, forced her to eat her own genitals, and dismembered her body.

He left the eyeballs as a birthday gift for Raspberry and gave her heart to Leo, her boyfriend, who 'Always held her heart' (or something along those lines). Dollya's corpse was grotesquely posed on the throne.

Please tell us why you feel you have earned this award.

This year, a lot of groundwork was laid down for getting this eventual ‘world-war’ kicked into motion, with Genesaris’ wealthiest and most powerful (save for Union City) city fully under his political control. He created conditions for strife and hardship and has ensured that the blame will go on the other nation. This will come to fruition as the work focuses on doing the same in Ashville and other places. This year was also a year on focusing on pushing limits and boundaries. I was asked if my character was as equal opportunistic as implied- the resulting actions against that poor squire showed that much certainly. It was definitely a push beyond my normal writing habits, so as disturbing as the entirety of that thread ended up being, it got me writing in new ways.

While it may not have been a year of sweeping territory claim, it was one of setting up base in one of the world's most powerful cities, and exploring just how much depravity can be committed against one individual at a time.

Other than that, ask the people. ;)

Starbucks got your coffee wrong- what evil thing might your character do in response?

He’d leave.

Seriously.

It would be later that night that would be the problem.

In the night, the barista would awaken to find their spouse tied to a chair, gagged, and Resurgence there with a knife at his/her throat, demanding that they ‘perfect’ their ‘poor’ coffee making skills. He would require they use a specific kind of light red coffee grounds and force him/her to brew it and add evaporated milk and all the other steps involved in making a ‘perfect cup’, while forcing both to drink down the imperfect products. It would only be as he finds it ‘satisfactory’ that he reveals this coffee is made from the ground bones of their children.

He’d let them run from the room to check on their children’s bedroom and find that indeed their children are now in fleshy pieces strewn across the room, with hunks of skin, fat, muscle, and hair painting the walls and staining the sheets. Broken shards of leftover bone are littered about, proving the words true.
He’d leave them alive, a lesson learned for working at such a smarmy establishment like Starbucks and being terrible at their meaningless job to boot. Well, the spouse is just collateral-damage.

So who will it be? Four candidates, all with impressive resumes- it comes to the voters to decide who has it out for best Villain of the year. Will it be:

Alexander: With the consumed powers of an ancient, he’s claimed a sizable chunk of Terrenus real-estate. His ambitions move from the outlying areas and have already begun with a conquest through large population centers that will continue this year.

Farkis: A weaver of mass terror, his crimes are certainly disruptive, having caused massive infrastructural damage as well as hitches in local economies. His ambitions included capturing a peacekeeper as well.

Roen: Roen is always up for getting into some sort of trouble and this year, he found his way to the lists by attempting regicide, a high crime indeed. With the devil, you never know what else might be in store.

Resurgence: Taking control of economic power centers and murdering princesses in his spare time, Resurgence makes moves with the future in mind as well. His exploits awakened La’Ruta, and ancient presence of Orisia whose story will come in future threads.
