Off Week Bonus Material: An Interview with King!

Interview with the King

The room is aphotic, it is the only word I can think of to describe. No other word that describes the color black seems appropriate.... there simply is no light. None with the exception of a small silver hanging fixture that casts a protective yellow circle around a table. It is here that I sit, within this warm yellow glow. All around me shadows encroach upon us, threatening to devour our very being, to rob the life from my very body. I can feel tremors of anxiety and fear playing a solemn melody on my spine. However it is not the looming darkness nor what lurks within it that strikes fear in my heart... no it is a man.

Sitting across the table from me, in a metal folding chair, is a man of high renown that is respected by man. A man with years of experience in his particular art, a man who always appears calm and collected. This man sits just at the edge of the light, his body partially concealed in the shadows. What is visible though are his hands, hands that rest clasped together atop the green felt table top.

As I squint my eyes, trying to see is features better, I swear I can make out the faint glow of embers and possibly see puffs of grey smoke entwining with the darkness, however I can't be sure. Steeling my soul I pick up a glass of brandy, take a sip, and then clear my throat.

Q:"Thank you King for joining me today. Let's start with, how long ago did you start role playing and where?" The first question leaves my lips as a stutter, my confidence is fleeting.
A:"I started role playing about... twelve years ago, I'd say. It was actually in MSN chat rooms, with a friend. I didn't even know it was called "roleplaying" at the time."

There is a certain ease to the way King speaks, words effortless roll from his tongue. However it's pretty clear that there is forethought put into his responses. It becomes painfully obvious that this is a man who is extremely comfortable talking to others. Hastily I finish off the glass of brandy, the warmth in my throat and stomach begins to expand.
Q:"When you started on MSN what type of characters were you playing and storylines were you crafting?"

A:"No characters, no real storylines. It was just my friend and myself using ourselves as "characters," writing random scenes. One day we might write some kind of Mission Impossible type deal for a few hours, and then later that night be samurai in Edo era Japan."
Q:"So at what point in time did you transition into structured RP with long lasting characters?"
A:"Not for a while, actually. I'd say he and I did that for about two years, off and on (it was just something fun to the pass the time) before he introduced me to the Yahoo! chatrooms. That's where I started actually making real characters, and joining in on really developed plots."

By now my teeth have gone numb and any anxiety I had felt is replaced by fuzziness. It feels like a haze is moving over my frontal lobe... a weird combination of clarity, fog, and pressure. I find my speech is more fluid and the questions come with less thought.
Q:"Where... err were you part of any 'famous' or 'infamous' groups back on yahoo?"

Clearly I've had a little bit too much to drink at this point, however I don't care and King doesn't seem to notice.
A:"Not really, no. I kept to myself and my small group of friends unless bothered."
Q: "Do you have any one storyline or roleplay that really sticks out in your mind from back then?"

A: "Yeah, actually. It was a fantasy roleplay being GM'd by a friend of mine. Really epic LotR type stuff, without the gay walking across a continent nonsense. My character had a pretty cool polearm."
As the interview continues, I realize that there is nothing to fear or maybe I'm just too tipsy to to be afraid?
Q: "Gotta ask, what was so cool about the polearm?"

A: "It only had one ability but I thought it was pretty fantastic. It could generate a "sheath of force" around the blade, that could either be used to increase blunt force (the sheath would explode on contact) or increase the cutting strength of the blade, and indirectly increase its reach by another foot or so. Considering it was invisible, except to things like true sight and such, I abused it pretty hard."

I prepare the next question, however King promptly interrupts before I can begin.
A: "The sheath of force was invisible, I mean. Not the entire polearm."

Admittedly I find it a tad strange that he feels the need to clarify, however I continue on with my line of questioning.
Q: "That's pretty awesome. So other than MSN and Yahoo, did you role play anywhere else?"

A: "Plenty of sites that've come and gone. .Com, Aoyn, Paragons... the list goes on."

Q: "So eventually you ended up on Valucre, what's made you stay around on this site?"

A: "Familiarity and a high return on my investments, primarily. The majority of the people I've met throughout my years of role playing are all on Valucre at the moment. I also get a lot in return for the amount of work I put into on there, which is always a good thing. And let's not forget that we've got some incredibly talented writers on there, as well."

It's very subtle and I just barely pick up on it. The change to his voice inflection is absolutely minuscule, however upon noticing it I am immediately filled with a sense of fondness and sincerity.

Q: "So in the past 12 years would you say there has been a noticeable change in your writing technique and style? Are there still things you'd like to improve on?"

A: "Most definitely. I'm pretty sure that I would probably vomit if I saw some of the early-to-middle things I've written. I like to think that my writing has matured into its own style now. Considering I don't believe writing is an art you can perfect, I'm always looking to improve on. Imagery is one of them."

Q: "I can definitely agree with everything you've said. So then, do you have any advice for new role players or role players that are looking to improve their writing abilities?"

A: "It's going to sound cliche, but read. Don't just read anything, though. Read what you know will be inspiring to you. Personally, I don't find myself being inspired by big-time authors or NYT best selling series. Instead, my fellow role players are the driving force behind my muse. If I'm lacking the motivation for a post, I'm more likely to pull up some of my favorite roleplayer's threads and spend thirty minutes to an hour just soaking it all in. There are a few series that do the trick for me, but not many. I also suggest that you don't hesitate to look things up. There are plenty of things that you can do to expand your vocabulary; research is one of them."

Q: "That definitely sounds like awesome advice. Now for something from left field. Did you know that based on an independent survey, conducted by someone who isn't me, you are considered to be one of the top 20 best T1ers on Valucre?"

A: "Really? That's cool considering I don't T1 anymore................... but I'm not really surprised, all things considered."

My left brow lifted a little at his response, at first I was taken a little aback. Then I really thought about, based on the number of T1ers on Valucre.... was top 20 really that impressive? If only 40 people T1ed was it really anything special to be in the top twenty? As I churned the thought over in my mind, I realized King was being arrogant. No, he was more or less reflecting on the current state of T1. There simply weren't as many people doing it anymore.
Q: "Ha, I'm not going to lie. I was kind of expecting a "That's nice who cares." kind of answer. Clearly you don't engage in a lot of T1 tournaments and really probably only use it for peacekeeper related duties. However for people who are interested in T1 and being able to do it well, is there anything you can recommend?"

A: "Don't try too hard. It's incredibly obvious when you are/do, and it never ends well.

Also, recognize that T1 is just another way of telling a story. Yes, it's telling a story with certain outside rules applied, but you're still telling a story regardless. Don't worry about your opponent's lore, either. They can base their character off of whatever they want, but that doesn't mean it effects you. A good example is just because DnD says the "astral plane is where all souls go to\originate from" doesn't mean it's the end all, be all. Focus on what's actually shared between you. As in, you're both standing in this field and if you cut him with your sword he's going to bleed.

The most important thing, though, is to have fun. I think that the sharp decline in T1 activity is due to the incredibly poor attitudes of the participants. It's very rare that a T1 match doesn't degrade into one person trying to force-feed the other their "fictional rules," or an epeen contest. Being honorable in victory and graceful in defeat seem to be lost arts, as well. I can't remember the last time I saw "Good match" at the end of a T1 fight. It's really depressing.
"

I can feel the haze of the alcohol starting to fade. Apparently I should have kept drinking because fear and anxiety start to bubble up from my gut. Shifting nervously in my seat a few times, it becomes increasingly clear that this interview needs to end before I lose my nerve.

Q: "Alright, well that is all the time we have for today. Those are definitely some pretty deep thoughts. With all that being said, do you have any final words for your fans and/or fellow members of Valucre?"

A: "It's been a pleasure to write with and for you. I appreciate the compliments, and hope to keep providing you all with my very best."

I thank him and stand. He accompanies me and we both lean over the table to shake hands. Oddly the shadows invade the ring of light keeping his features obscured. Relinquishing my grip I turn to collect my things, only to pause. Another question rushes from the depths of my mind, instinctively I look up to ask it... however he is already gone. The light fixture above me flickers once and then dies, suddenly I'm enveloped by the darkness. It is here I ponder the interview and realize, I never had anything to fear. King was a pretty damn cool guy.

Santa Dropped Your Gift Off Early!

That's right, the Valucre Blog Weekly Update of Course!

I mean, were you really wanting anything else for Christmas at all? Wait, don't answer that, because I might get my feelings hurt. Okay, so maybe you want a little more than the Valucre blog update for Christmas, but I sure think it can make a fantastic stocking stuffer- what, don't think it will fit? Tell you what, just write down www.valucre.org on to a slip of paper, roll it up, and stuff it in someone's stocking and voila! Fantastic gift and increased readership all in one- tell me, can that be any more win or what?
What, you think I was gonna hand out these?

Say, what do you guys want for Christmas? Leave a comment below (yes, here on the blog for once guys :P) telling me two things you want for Christmas- one being something of material (Game console, book, etc) and one being something intangible- a day to relax, a dream vacation, a good day, etc. I'm genuinely curious and I'd like to see what sort of things you guys come up with- particularly for the second one.

Well, speaking of all these gifts, I give you the last update of the month, your final update for the year, the very last Valucre blog post of 2013! But wait, what is this? I intend to put something up the day after Christmas? Why yep, sure do, but it is not a traditional blog post- nope. This is a special little update provided by another member. So you're going to have to tune in next week to see it. ;)

What's Happening Valucre?

The Chosen: Round Three Continues- It's happening- no, seriously, the match is one! The final duel before someone earns rights to face the last champion of the Chosen Tournament is under way, both participants having posted multiple times each now! This fight is going smoothly so far, so let's see how this one goes. ;)

Panic Mode- Check this out, a couple new quests put together by a frequently featured writer here on the blog. This thread itself does not direct you to one quest but two, both with different objectives and requirements. Both pertain to problems with rebels that are trying to build an uprising in the Cold South. Care to quell the chaos?

Win an Easy 1,500vb- Advertised before, but it got bumped so I am putting it back up. First two people to win ten consecutive T1 matches without using the same character twice (at least, until you run out of characters), following the Chosen Ruleset and winning by winning- not judge's ruling and/or time-out get 1,000vb each. However, once that happens, those two must fight eachother- winner takes 500vb from the loser (one gets 1,500vb, the other 500vb). Think you can do it?

Heaven, Hell, & Earth- I am pretty sure this hit the blog at some point, but it's back up and looking for participants, so its back up here on the blog. :P To run this down in a quick manner (there is a ton of good detail pertaining to this in the interest check itself), the idea behind this RP is based on a story once read by the thread originator, involving an angel who fell from grace, by allowing the death of a boy who was destined to become a good man. The angel is given a second chance to watch over a girl who was supposed to be that man's soul mate, but again, he succumbs to his poor judgment and seduces the young woman, getting her pregnant and effectively sentenced to death (she is a slave). The slave owner keeps the little girl, who grows up into a young woman. In the interim, there is much going on in the bowels of hell, where the young woman's guardian angel, now turned to the side of darkness, tortures the fallen angel- a part they need filled! Want to try out playing someone who is actively being tortured? Or perhaps wanting to fill a smaller role? Check out the thread!
Ahh, he's cute in that sort of stalkerish way...

Winter Formal in Genesaris- The Winter Formal is just starting up and it definitely deserves some attention, because you know that when Genesaris gets something big going, there is going to be plenty of opportunity for good RP to be abound. Make sure you drop in...

Insert AWESOME Title Here- The thread is put up as a proposal to turn around some of the slowing activity on the site (something I as the blog writer have noticed as well). The thought is that there should be a great sea voyage, where characters go where no one has boldly gone before, exploring new lands and discovering new places. There is a rough plan to get it going, but this is largely a develop as you go sort of RP. Do you want to see the new world?

Markets of Kal'bajar- Things like this always deserve a second run, so I am definitely going to make sure this gets the exposure it deserves. Make sure you stop by the market and see what sort of goods you might be looking for. Never know what you might find... Go check it out.

Monstrous Disaster in Mezthaluen!Well, someone withdrew, so there is definitely another space open. If you want a fast paced action Role-play that involves killing terrible monsters putting down the townspeople, they certainly could use your help!

It's a Major Award- I won it!
Site Changes!- Last warning- keep in mind, changes are coming down the pipes and there will be a loss of groups and blogs on the site itself, so if you have some near and dear stuff in there- get it backed up like YESTERDAY.

2013 Awards Coming Soon!- Yep, be on the look out, we have the 2013 Valucre awards on the way. Preparations are being made- it should  be more organized than ever before and definitely worth your time to brainstorm and think about: Whose RP did you like this year? Who played the best hero/villain? What thread did you most enjoy- things to think about in the next coming weeks!

Featured Read of the Week-

Hey, its a new feature and this time, it does not include King or Aleksei- finally, found some more talent, ha ha! Anyway, I enjoyed this one from the very beginning. The opening begins with a sort of fairy tale, only this one does not end with a happily ever after, but something much closer to the works of the Grimm fairy tales. From there, it sets up a rather neat interaction between a pair of characters who go off to explore the myth.

Congratulations to Marik Cayne and Doge for being the authors of this week's featured thread!

A Dead Man Tells no Tale
The Rp begins with the retelling of an old fairy tale, one that does not quite end in the way you might think one should. It immediately jumps back to the current time, where two adventurers happen upon each other, both with the same goal in mind- to explore that mysterious cave told of in that old story. It leads into the two of them going off together, one riding on a horse and the other keeping up by means of his naturally capable legs that carry him with the same ease as the man on the horse. They soon come upon dung of an unknown animal, finding the remnants of human flesh within it- the dung is fairly fresh. Some further induction leads to the conclusion that the animal is likely a dragon- and both are prepared to face it down.

Read and find out what happens later. ;)

I have a special feature for next month- stay tuned!

This Week's Feature: Elrux, Muhir

  • Defenses: Military guard who monitor the mines.
  • Hot Spots:
    • Argane Mines: Available ore includes Argane, ore that would increase the holder’s magical capacity by ten fold, those unable to use the mana crafts would find themselves suddenly capable, and those who could would now find themselves ten fold.
Canonical Occurrences by Members:
  1. As of Now: Rampant overgrowth reported around the abandoned strip mines, which are now rolling meadows. Aragane reserves will increase in purity and number.
  2. Rumors: It is rumored the ORDER has a headquarters within, instead of a typical outpost.
Available Quests:
  • None Currently.

Brief Summary of Lore:

Elrux was originally established as the original capital of Muhir, before the founded of the religious nexus of Aeliyr. As this ore was mined from the depths of the soil, it would prove to be good and bad, good for the obviously commercial and applicable uses of the ore. Bad in that the land around the city would slowly die off, almost as if the natural magical aptitude of the land was directly connected to that of the ore itself. This was in part a large reason as to why the capital city was moved; the people needed soil and area that was ripened with life.

Groups like, ORDER would move into the city to keep an eye on the mining process, all uses of the ore would be regulated by that of the Aeliyrian Empire, exported to only the most trusted of allies, the ore has become a staple in the commerce of the Empire.

Newly Awarded!

None this week, check back next week!

Valucre Blog Challenge!

That's not Santa- its me in five years...

I tried a Haiku and I was left without fine words to woe me, so let's move on to the next one and see if that gains any traction at all.

New Challenge of the Week: There are some common issues that come up in writing, sometimes called 'writing crutches' that inexperienced- and even experienced- writers run into. One of which is breaking that old rule- show, don't tell. Sometimes, we find it much easier to tell the person the fine details without presenting it to them ishow me who they are (or what they are feeling in a particular moment) without telling me- no telling at all! You are going to have to practice using objective descriptions, things that we can all observe and likely imagine in a similar way.
n a way that allows them to decide it for themselves. For this challenge, I want you to take a character and

I hope someone does this one, because this is a favorite area of mine- I preach this stuff at work for legal documentation :P.

Since we're losing blogs, just PM it to me! :)

New Members and Returns!

Welcome:

I will remember and cherish this moment... maybe >_>
Ravenna:
You come from a place both wet and gloomy- sounds like my backyard as well. Then again, the Pacific Northwest has some pretty similar weather to your neck of the woods across the pond. Getting back on topic now, looks like you are planning on starting up the next chapter of your RP career- well, we're damn happy to have Valucre be the place where you put your setting. We hope you get off to a fantastic start in fleshing out that plot. ;)

SuddenlyARavenAppears:
Another who seeks improvement in writing by means of role-play participation- believe me, it is a common theme here on Valucre and as such, you could not find a better place to come in and write and get the support you need. The site might look a little intimidating, but you'll get it in time. Welcome, and enjoy. :)

Meltingman:
Hey, anytime a new member comes around looking to join us in role-playing, the experience is awesome for us. We hope that in turn we are able to provide you with an awesome environment to get your RP needs quenched and that sense of fun pumping. Welcome to Valucre, be prepared for some kickass times. ;)

Nommies:
A tip for the newcomer- I would never suggest leaving the name in which we call you open to, "Whatever floats your boat" because some people in the world find their boats left afloat by some really... 'different' things, and who knows what you might be called at the end of the day. Anyway, I hope Valucre provides you with all the RP you can handle and then some. :)

Sirus:
Assuming the capitalization of the Y in JaY was intentional, I think I just might remember you (from back in the .com days)- if not, perhaps a coincidence, but you did mention having historical ties to Ayenee. We look forward to what you plan to show off and how that you become well aclimated here. :D

Returns:

Castrael:
Welcome back, your first stay was much too short- much too short indeed! I hope this time around we can help you get involved in some damn fine RP- because we like to keep people around. ;D

Fon:
Some people seem to get coming and going to such an extent that I can never quite tell if the door is swinging open or if that door is actually swinging shut! Fon, you're becoming one of those people- so stop it! Grow some roots and stick around... I kid, I kid- about the growing some roots, not the sticking around part. Understand that life can get you wrapped up, but it's better to see ya here than to see you disappear.

Palmtop Tiger:
The Return of the Hopeless Romance Club's progenitor- welcome back to Valucre! Hope your schedule allows you the ability to stick around a little longer this time! :)

Feel like we got a little short changed this week on this section, cuz not so many new people signed up. It does make one want to feel a little... sad, but I will not shed manly tears for this- no, we shall have more in the future, I am sure of it!

Birthdays of the Week?

So, here are the week's listed birthdays. PLEASE, keep in mind that if you do not make birthday's on your profile listed and public, they will not show up on the Calendar. If they are not on the Calendar, I have no way of knowing about it and therefore no way of adding it here! If you want a shoutout for your Bday, be sure to make it viewable!

Happy birthday all you fine Valucreans!

Other Highlights?

Hightlights for you maybe. I tend to be a grinch about em.

Subscriptions- Ever feel like you just have way too many threads to keep track of? Wonder how some of us carry 12+ role-plays at any given time? Well, a lot of us are using the subscriptions features- so you should give it a whirl too! Subscribing to a thread gives you the option of being notified via the board, via email, or both, and these notifications may come instantly (after a new post), at the end of the day, or the end of the week. It's pretty handy! Subscribe to a thread by using the 'Thread Tools' option on the top of a thread. Manage them by going into Settings.

Reply to All-  Yep, if you get a PM sent to more than one person and you want everyone to see your response, be sure to use the Reply all function on your PM. More information (a picture!) here. Want more Did You Knows- go here.

Closing Thoughts?

I think everyone could use the comfort of cocoa and a warm fire

Got to thinking- what do I write up for the last blog of 2013? It got me thinking back to what I’ve written and thought about all year long, and that’s when it hit me- and no, it was not a fruitcake.

Today, let’s close with thoughts about the year’s close: How did this year go for you? Did you learn anything, do anything new and exciting, accomplish goals? Was it a rough year, one you could look back and say you overcame adversities and became a stronger person because of it? Or was this a year where things just kind of came and went, where nothing new really happened and things seem about the same?

I bring this up, because I think it’s something worth reflecting on, especially as we approach our new year. I have never been one for New Year’s Resolutions- I always found them pretty silly- but I don’t think it hurts to have some goals in mind for the next year. Maybe something you know you can do better at. Or something you really want to find a way to get better at. Maybe you just want to actually do or see something- well, the New Year is coming, so why not do it this year?

Want to get back into taking classes? Even if all you can do is scrape together some money and go out and take one class- do it. You will be surprised by how great it feels to get back out there and start taking something, to start making progress forward, even if it is just a tiny step forward on a very long road ahead.

Want to meet new people and travel? Well, for starters- show up for Jordan Con (Many Valucre Brethren will be there). That little self-serving bit of advertisement aside, I also encourage you to go out and do it- stop hesitating. Stop making excuses. Put together a bit of money and just get out there and do it.

Want this to be the year that you lose weight? Well, hell with just ‘losing weight’- make this the year you take better care of yourself. Weight loss comes with it, and making the lifestyle changes are what is going to get you going than just shedding off some weight without making lasting changes.

Now, making changes isn’t easy- always easier said than done, right? Well, let me give you a couple of tools that might be helpful in implanting some of these changes, or getting you to a place where you can manage them.

First, the 5S methodology:

Sort: Look at your life first, and figure out what in your schedule, your stuff, your expenses- anything- that you can do away with or don’t need. What might not be all that important to you but is bogging you down when trying to reach other goals? Look at the things that remain and make sure you prioritize them so you can make sure you take care of that which is most important first, and the less important things later.

Straighten: This is often the most difficult part- put things together so they flow. Maybe you feel like you don’t have time to do X and Y, but you realize you might be able to accomplish both at the same time! Or, perhaps X and Y are close together, so when you leave to do them, if you do them together, you save yourself an extra trip (which saves time, and possibly gas/fare). Maybe one task is easy to roll into another. A couple of examples:

1. Need time to do laundry and time to do homework: So, take laundry to a laundromat and do your homework while they wash and dry.

2. Need to go to store and pick groceries. Also need to pick up prescription later: Do something else now, then go get groceries later, when you can pick up that prescription at the same time.

Systematic Cleaning: Now that you have cleaned off junk from the agenda and are trying to arrange things into a more flowing sort of schedule, you need to actually go through and make sure everything is clean- this means not just your living space or work area, but in general as well. Anything that needs polished up, or you find interferes with following the schedule you set for yourself? This the time to make sure that your environment or lack of preparation will not be the reason you fail!

Standardize: Alright, we have cleared off the junk, straightened things out so they flow, gone back through and cleaned up the garbage and things that get in the way- so now we need a systematic plan that we can apply on a daily basis. This is the scheduling piece, but also a means of standardizing how you are going to accomplish things. Make sure it is consistent and easy to follow.

Sustain: The last piece, this is where you take the preparations and skills above and then turn them into habit.

I also have another bit for you, called using a “Logic Model”

Think of your goal. What is your over reaching goal? Do you want to run a marathon by the end of the year? Do you want to improve your writing? Think about this overall goal, so we can break it down into some simpler components.

Resources: What resources will you need to accomplish this? If you want to run a marathon, will you need running shoes? Do you need a gym membership? Better clothing for running? A specific diet plan? What components go into this goal? Get a list going and have it written out- so you have all these resources before starting.

Activities: Now that you have your resources figured out, now you need to make a realistic plan to begin working towards your big goal. Let’s run with the marathon goal (ha, bad pun). You have your needed resources, but now you need to start working toward your goal of being able to run 26k, while right now you can only run 1/2k. Maybe week one, you will run the 1/2k and then walk 1/2k. Then next week, you will run 3/4k and walk 1/2k. Then, the week after you will run 1k and walk 1/2k. If you notice, each week, your new activity will work towards getting something greater. That greater thing is the next step.

Outputs: This is looking at what your activities are doing. If you run 1/2k daily and then walk 1/2k daily, you expect to be able to run 3/4k and walk 1/2k next week- this is your expected output. You will need to go back and forth between Activities and outputs to eventually work towards your big goal.

Outcome: The big goal. The final outcome of these activities will be able to run in the 26k marathon. So, every activity put out and output that brought you one step closer. It might have taken you that full year, but after a full year, you could run that 26k- congratulations!

Things to keep in mind with a logic model plan (called SMART):

Specific: Keep the goal specific- if you have a broad goal, break it down into chunks and create plans that work towards meeting each aspect of the broad goal. Don’t over complicate things.

Measurable: Make sure you can measure the progress, so you can keep track of it- you want to see improvements in the outputs, so you have to have some means of measurement. This could be reduced debt, lost weight, increased savings, etc.

Attainable: Keeping it real, make sure this goal is possible. Don’t plan for outcomes that are far beyond that activity and the output- take baby steps if needed. Your goal should not be to have an outcome of swimming for 10mi without stopping by next week, when you have never swam in your life.

Realistic: Ties with the above, make sure it is realistic for you to try and get this. Making plans to be a lottery winner and never having to work again is not a sound retirement strategy. >>

Time-Bound: In order to keep this progress flowing, you need to put it on a timeline. Add it to a schedule and then make sure you stick to that schedule.

Lastly, an extra ‘K’:

Keep it meaningful: Do something important to you. Do something you will want to stick with and follow through, because this is going to take some self-motivation to sustain- so make sure you have it.

That’s it for the logic model.

Now, you might be asking- Hey Acies, do you use this stuff for yourself?

Well, outside of work- not really, and not for a good reason either.

So, now you’re saying- wait, doesn’t this make you a stinkin hypocrite?

Answer: Absolutely.

Look, they say that those who can’t do teach, and I’ll you what, I love teaching. Really, it’s just that I have not been good at applying these principles outside my work place, even though I really should- perhaps that will be a big goal for myself this year- get better at maintaining this system so I can do better with improvements. Truth is, I am by no means perfect- worse part is that I often know better and know of ways to get better, and then don’t practice them- this is a shame on me.

I hope that at least one of you out there might benefit from this. If even only one person does- I will have made a worthwhile difference.

Take that as you go into your New Year, have a great Christmas, and the blog will see you in January 2014!

It Goes Big or it Goes Home

Because there just isn't any other way for this baby to roll...

It’s kinda funny that I make a point of this on one of our smaller updates, but what can I do- not a record breaking number of new members rolled through this week and the content from the Water Cooler is significantly down as well. While I can guarantee that I am always going to come out here, doing my best to provide you with quality content and such, I can’t always promise that the amount of content available for me to prepare, let alone present, is always going ot be of a wealthy amount.

That said, let’s get crackin on this blog.

What's Happening Valucre?

The Chosen: Round Three Continues- Okay, so when I said this Friday, I meant next Friday... right? RIGHT? Okay, maybe I really did mean the Friday before, but another school related delay came up and has now pushed it to this Friday- honest, it will happen this Friday! So, be prepared, the final match to determine who has rights to challenge the previous champion- are you ready for this?

Winter Formal in Genesaris- Feel like getting decked out in your finest clothes, heading out for a night of merrymaking and good old-fashioned partying? Care to walk the halls of the newest castle discovered within the Cold Mountains, mingle amongst the nobility and some of the most powerful political figures in Genesaris, and perhaps Terrenus as well? Of course you do, which is why you are going to go this thread, state your interest, and watch for the update that tells you where this RP is happening- it’ll be within the next couple of days, so look out!

Markets of Kal'bajar- The slum markets of Kal’bajar, a place to get your purchasable goods of Niche along with some of Terrenus’ blackmarket goods. The market will be experiencing some overhauls, so be prepared for changes and all that, but if you are looking for a different sort of place to go out and buy some very strange items, you have to check out this shop. Formatting is definitely unique (in a good way!) and there is lots of fun that could be had of this place. Go check it out.

No One Escapes Antigone Isles- A quest style RP that will require stealthy infiltration, careful planning, and a whole lot of thinking outside the box. You will be taking characters from a technologically inferior setting and moving them into a technologically advanced setting, with little to no use of your magic available to you. One must search through the city to find out what has happened to a missing college student, and upon finding that out, must find a way to get him out alive, before it is too late. There is definitely some risk involved in this, as anyone who gets caught- will not have anyone sent in for their rescue. Be careful, good luck, and come join me!

The Commander Returns- If you play someone who resides within the North of Genesaris, this likely pertains to you. A group known as the Northern Threat has taken it upon themselves to claim the North under the rulership of a king, whereas the Norther cities currently rule under a council led by Coastal Grande. If you have dealings with the North, this very well may interest you. It has captured my attention after all, since I have someone of great influence sitting on that council, a man who is very much disillusioned with the military groups of the North. Could get interesting. Check it out...

Monstrous Disaster in Mezthaluen!A quick way to get involved in what has been a mostly fast paced Rp with plenty of opportunity to get some punches in and work on claiming a good VB reward. Time is running out though- that reward will soon disappear. Best be quick about it! Can you help?

Site Changes!- Another friendly reminder that we are switching formats and that changes be coming down. Site either should have already been temporarily down for backup or it soon shall be- so be ready for those sorts of interruptions. I'm playing with the new site format right now- seems pretty darn cool :)

Lore of the Week!

This Week's Feature: Coastal Grande, Genesaris

At a Glance:
  • Leader:  Counsel of 8, including Benjamin Vesches
  • Population: Native Northern Genesarians, in addition to many tourists from all parts of the world.
  • Defenses: Prime Military--Invictus Army: Hardened by generations of civil war and unrest, the Invictus Army has a dark history of demolishing entire cities and decimating the South. Highly intelligent and ruthless, the Invictus Army spare nothing when dealing with criminals and lawless intruders, often performing executions by “accident”. To their credit, crime is at an all-time low.
    • 25,000 City Guard
      • High Ranking Officers: 160
      • Jail Workers: 1,500
      • Capital Guards: 800
      • Special Assignments Officers: 90
    • Military: Houses 40% of The Great North's Army, about 900,000-1,100,000 troops.
      • Territory Coverage: About 450mi Radius
      • Estimated Number of Forts (Contains a brigade): 350
      • Troops able to defend city within 1 day: 50,000-60,000
      • Time to gather entire army: 7-12 days.
    • Counsel Member Benjamin Vesches is a former Edgemaster- a very skilled one in fact.
  • Hot Spots:
    • Yum Janus Tavern: A cross shaped tavern that is divided into three dining sections; the rich, the not so rich, and a place where both can mingle. A cause of controversy, the only thing everyone agrees on is that Yum Janus has an incredibly high standard of food and service. With prices from the modest to the insane, even the cheapest of meals leave the hungry satisfied. Due to its popularity, the Yum Janus company has spread to nearly every city, but this is where it all began.
    • Airship Ocean Base: Situated out from land to sea and therefore protected quite well against mainland attacks, 8 airships languish like shining gems on the surface of the clear waters. Shining gems though they seem, they are all outfitted with some of the finest weaponry possible. In contrast to the tear and jet-shaped airships of modern times, these take a more revolutionary approach; spirals stacked on top of one another and sustained by curving pillars, making them taller rather than wider. They also have a small fleet of sea ships.
Canonical Occurrences by Members:
  1. As of Fixing the Game: One of the 8 counsel members was assassinated, but the death was made to appear to be an accident. A frontrunner for the candidacy was murdered by an assassin who later 'turned out to be the other front runner'- captured by Benjamin Vesches. A young woman is brutally murdered, her death pinned on an ambassador from Ashville- the father seeing to it that embassador will never return to Terrenus. A plague is recently released, which will have further implications down the road. The thread will end with Ben as a counsel member with a great deal of influence and control.
Available Quests:
  • None Currently.

Brief Summary of Lore:

The pride of the Great North extends out from land to sea. Coastal Grande is the largest city inall of Genesaris and by far one of the most beautiful, second only to Aelindra City in size and glory. No missions of conquest have ever touched Coastal Grande, and it has only grown in strength. As a result, Northern residents tend to be arrogant and overt, looking down on those of more modest cities and towns.

Despite the undercurrents of racism and cultural stigma, no one can deny that Coastal Grande is one of the best tourist areas and resorts. The economy is exceptionally strong, allowing for splendid hotels, restaurants, and luxuries rarely found anywhere else. Due to the city’s relationship with the sea, high-class seafood is incredibly popular and has been shipped out continent-wide, resulting in a great surge of income for the government. The Great North has used this to strengthin their magitech and military, which has caused some worry in lands with a history of war with the North.

Valucre Blog Challenge!

Well now, no one bit on this one. But see, I am a persistant bastard who will keep trying and trying until I get some results- someday, this too shall bear fruit! Until then, let's find a new challange.

New Challenge of the Week: I want a Haiku. But not just a Haiku, but one that must incorperate the following four objects:

Apple
Egg
Tiger
Knife

Find a way to write me a Haiku that flows, makes sense, and uses all four of those. Bonus if it is touching and lovely. xP

Since we're losing blogs, just PM it to me! :)

New Members and Returns!

Welcome:

LocNessa:
I can see you're new, and all you want to do is role-play? Perhaps not the most ambitious list of agendas for one's life pursuits, but hell, I'll get behind it! If all you want to do is role-play, let me say for starters that you have absolutely come to the right place. Welcome to Valucre, hope you get that RP fix. ;)

Diamurai:
Another wayward traveler from the depths of Gaiaonline, in growing  up and out seeking a new place to make their own- yeah, we see it a lot. We also hear a lot about how people aren't even sure where to begin with our site (we're working on that!), so don't feel bad. You got it in the right though- people get it figured out eventually. ;)

Hezarkke:
Let me start off by saying that avatar... is AWESOME. Oh, I wish I had that around while I was doing my halloween board event. Anyway, stoked to see that you are here to 'RP like Crazy' and hope that you get more than enough to fuel that manic drive for the good stuff. Keep RPing, it's what keeps places like these flowing!

Epsilon:
Hey, someone who comes with a pronounciation guide for his name! Definitely could use that with our users who have more confusing names, but yours is pretty straight forward :P. Of course, who am I to talk- my name is latin- figure that one out. Anyway, the site should lay itself out to you in time- she's good about that. ;) Anyway, good luck to you in your RP endeavors!

LilMissRose:
Looks like you know a few people here already, and promises to bite as well- jeez, things just keep getting fresh down here *adjusts collar*. Anyway, I'm sure you'll find a few people willing to let you take a stab at getting your teeth into their necks. Until then, take a look around and see if you can find yourself some good RP. :)

1ate7:
Ha, I like how there is this thing about, 'aboard' and someone ends up saying it not long after. The thread is a walking pun/joke factory- look at that name, 1 ate 7, instead of that dasterdly 7 eating the 9. If that was the connection. Who could say, I am starting to get a migrain here, so excuse me if I get these things wrong. What I won't get wrong is how Valucre is going to be an awesome place for you. ;)

Amoux:
Interesting opening- went for a bit of an ominous stylistic introduction versus something a little more traditional, I can dig it. According to your status though, we can't readily expect much from you until the 17th anyway, so guess we got about another 5 days yet. Tragic, but we shall wait them, for we like our new members! Hey look, another aboard message got in there too- what has been seen cannot be unseen!

Aether:
Glad to see that you're poking around and looking to have some fun while you're here. A great way to start off an introduction thread- quote a character you are brining to the table. Of course, now you actually have to bring that character to the table, whether you planned to before or not- hope you don't feel cornered!

Slmkaz:
Well, I do believe we have already met- but that's okay, you still get a formal greeting (if you want to call it formal, hah!)  in the weekly blog nonetheless. Looking to play characters who are not just interesting to you but interesting for others to read is a great way to go about things- I look forward to seeing it. ;)

Jehan:
Sounds like you have some experience in a small number of genres, but let me tell you- there is plenty more where that came from and all you need to do is go out there and explore it! I hope you do, because while many of us owe our roots to Tolkein (either directly though reading or indirectly through RPGs his books inspired) we all have a varied array of tastes and things we participate in. :)

Returns:

Only one this week:

MerryGoRoundofLife:
Sounds like you have had a lot of stuff going on, but glad to see that you are back up on your feet and ready to get back into some role-play. I hope some immersion into this fantasy world of ours helps bring you back to level ground. ;)

Ranking- Want to see how you rank up amongst others in terms of VB accumulation, posts, or rep? Well, there is no easy way to get there at I know of, but I can link you to the page directly. Used to be able to hit this up under a tab in your profile, but hasn't worked for me in ages. You can also get to it by going to the page to send someone Valbullion, and then clicking one of the other tabs instead (in this case, Ranking).

Did You Know-  About Bounties and Warrents? If you got a guy wanted in your land, you can put he or she up on a hit list of sorts. The Did You know you need for this is here, it gives you the details. Want more Did You Knows- go here.

Closing Thoughts?

Funny thing about these closing thoughts- I often come up with a great idea for them, one that I think, ‘hey, that’s perfect, I need to do that this week’ and ‘hell, that won’t even end up being that long either’ and guess what happens… yep, my sleep deprived head goes and drops that memory off somewhere. I think the little voices in my head keep trying to assure me that is somewhere for ‘safekeeping’, but I am not inclined to believe them. They have told me many bad ideas before.

Bastards.

Anyway, when I forget one, I usually manage to come up with another one in short order- so it just had to be this week that as I am gearing up to do this thing, I start to get a migraine. Yeah, and I have to be at work for another 12hrs to boot. >_>

Enough about me though, let’s focus back on what thoughts I can formulate.

I had to do a little sifting around on the interwebz to find something that inspired me, and so I did, so here we go. It’ll be on the shorter side due to time constraints and the fact that my school feels ready to split in half. @_@

In our everyday life, as we interact with each other and our environment, it is easy to become lost in this daily routine, this mundane flow that becomes habit, a form of autopilot if you will. We form routines, and in doing so we become habituated to the stimulus and events that go on around us, losing focus of the changes and taking notice of things that not only occur on their own but because we made it so. Living life, sometimes it’s easy to lose sight of just how much we can influence things around us- writing it off, putting aside the accountability, letting things go…

This is not to say that we should start shouldering responsibility for all bad things, but instead, I want to impart with all of you the importance of being mindful. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mindfulness_(psychology)

Are you truly aware of your surroundings your life situations, the way you are having a direct effect on how they turn out? Or are you lost in the everyday rhythm of life, flowing with the routines, ignoring the ripples and waves you create as you move along?

Believe me, I have a lot to work on in this area myself- it is so easy to become immersed in routines and just becoming a work oriented mind, that sometimes you miss the big picture, or the opportunities to make change, to be the one that makes a difference. No, no one is a beautiful, absolutely unique snowflake (some of that new-age pseudo psychology nonsense that seems to be spitting out a generation of very self-centered people 0_o), but we are all different, with our different views, ideas, takes on a situation, perceptions, and connections.

Every day, we go out and make ripples. Maybe ours were insubstantial and unimportant. Or maybe, unknowingly even, we went out and made changes that had a profound difference in at least one life. Will you be aware the next time that opportunity comes around, that next time where maybe the difference between something tragic, or even just something mundane, and that of something extraordinary, is you having just enough focus and awareness in the situation, to think about it for a moment, and make a critical decision?

Deep stuff to ponder on- take that with you this week as we look forward to the holidays. Wish me luck on shedding off this vile headache, yeah? ;)

Dashing Through the Blog

Because I HasThings to Do... Look at My Backlog...Far Too Much to Chew!

QQQQQQ

Anyway, welcome once again to the Valucre blog! I did my best to get through this in a timely manner while simaltaniously making it feel like that was exactly NOT what I did, ha. As always, I strive to deliver quality content, but as it frequently seems to be the case, I am trying to cram in an unusually high workload and studying/exam prep for my exam this week. This is why I try to prep this sucker ahead of time, but instead of having time to do that this weekend, I was incredibly busy, gahhh! Well, life happens as you all know and the best you can do is roll with the punches.

A funny saying that. Why would you 'roll with punches'? Frankly, I try to dodge or deflect them. Hell, if someone is trying to kick my ass, the last place I want to be at is on the floor rolling with them. No thank you- well, maybe there is an exception to that, but that's a different sort of ass kicking.

Anyway, hope this blog is up to the usual kick ass standards. G'day Valucre, let's see what's going on this week. ;)

What's Happening Valucre?

The Chosen: Round Three Continues- Continues this Friday that is, as both participants are swamped in schoolwork at the moment. The first week will probably start off slower and a little less than full throttle as we have to wrap up that school business, but after the school stuff is out of the way- watch out, this one ought to be good!

Frost Hunting- Do you enjoy hunting giants? How about the chance to rip wings off frost fairies (come on, we all know half of you are sadistic bastards)? Well, if you want to get in on the RP opportunities provided by the cold snap and get in on some Gaian academy based stuff as well, go help this person out with their planned trek into the wilderness.

Check Out the Gaian Academy- Hey, if you haven't checked out the Gaian Academy, you just might be missing out some really cool stuff. A variety of classes for everyone, with all manner of lessons available for that growing character. Want to start from scratch with a character while giving them a realistic chance at success? Start at the academy!

Dimensional Jumps- This is one of those threads where the first line uttered by the character was probably something along the lines of 'opps'- which nothing good ever came of that. The character in this thread accidentally jumped himself into some other realm unknown, and this RPer is looking for someone, or someones, to come playa friend who goes off searching for where the heck they ended up. Care to play search and rescue?

Warrior's Retreat- Hey, do you play a medically oriented character or have interest in starting one up? Do you want to come to the aid of an injured character and provide some help in getting this person back on their feet? Well then, as long as you know something about the anatomy of a vampire (or perhaps have your Complete Idiot's Guide to Vampires on hand, you know, for reference), you can get involved in helping this poor person out. And if you are not the most medically inclined, perhaps you can come RP as a support person. Will you lend a hand?

Clear Cut for Valjer City- Valjer city needs some help clearing out a bandit problem in a nearby woods they intend to use for lumber harvesting. A small group is requested to accompany a couple of their rangers in getting rid of this problem. If you wish to endevour on this task, let the OP know!

Monstrous Disaster in Mezthaluen!Another mention because they are closing in on their deadline bonuses (fyi to the people involved- extension coming through due to me being too busy to keep up, but only one that makes up for my delay, not a super long one, so better hurry!) and so they might need help getting this wrapped up. VB, stone with unique ability hidden among them to the first who finds it- all you got to do is slay some beasts. Quick, help the townsfolk, they know not how to defend themselves!

Site Changes!- News  not pertaining to role-play in and of itself, but in case you are the type of person who might not pay attention to threads that get put on force read, I am going to reiterate important news here- the site is moving. Not URLs, but across software, and with those changes, we're losing our current blogs (on Valcure, not here) and groups- if you have -anything- that needs to be backed up, do it ASAP! Like, yesterday, or by the end of the weekend or something. The software change moves us onto a better platform, one that should have some better features and stability (yay) so be prepared for the changes and again, back up important group/blog stuff!

Lore of the Week!

This Week's Feature: Blairville, Terrenus

At a Glance:
  • Leader:  Regent Induo Katamus
  • Population: Highly diverse, with no solid majority of Humans, Dwarven, Gnome, Gypsy, Goblin or Wellfolk (Automata, Sauren, Maas). Small population of Molocks (Mole-people) present as indigenous population. Numerous other unique entities are also present but too small to register in a census.
  • Defenses:
    • 3,000 Registered Militia
    • 3,000 Constabulary Officers
    • 3,000 Terran Guard
    • 1,000 Cartographers: Cartographer's are Blairville's elite transplanar exploration team, tasked with exploring and mapping out the unknown doors of the multiverse. In order to perform their job at full capacity, they are trained rigorously in body and mind and are often tasked with the destruction of any 'unnatural aberrations', often having to do so alone. Almost no one has actually seen a cartographer, but it is said that during the attack on Blairville cartographers went about tearing the heads of men and demons alike with their bare hands. Their only known identifying feature is their strange, rust-colored armor.
    • PeaceKeeper: : Merle Atreides
  • Hot Spots:
    • Inn de Clairmont- An ornate, three-story caravansary. The Inn de Clairmont serves as a way-point on Terran's northern road. A common home for passing travelers, it boasts a stable for their horses, a small smithy for small repairs, and an attached shop for purchasing essential wares. Just the place to relax-, re-equip and get what you need before moving on to the next leg of your journey. The hanging gardens fringing the building and surrounding its inner courtyard, which is often used for venues, is also a tourist attraction.
    • Rookhelm Tavern Hall- A finer place to feast and rest your feet could not be found for miles away from the Rookhelm Tavern Hall. Somewhat a more legitimate establishment than most towns might offer by way of tavern, the Rookhelm is often times used as a meeting place for businessmen, merchants, visiting dignitaries and the Constabulary.
    • The Gypsy Market- The Original Bazar of Blairville, and a grand location for magical trinkets and bizarre curios. It is here that many a hedgewizard plies their trade, along with many thieves.
    • Tower Quarter- Arguably the only proper mage district in all of Terrenus, and inarguably the larges. Numerous spires jut out from the low-lying shop fronts, and many "mage clubs" are hidden in the twists of houses and along the gaps in the cobble. Here the professional wizard makes their services available to the public, sometimes with prices too steep or unique for the common brand of adventurer.
    • The Unterholm- Blairville's subterranean furnaces, the crucibles and kilns that form the backbone of Blairville's ore refinery business. Much of the lower caste in Blarville society filter their way down into these depths, finding honest if physically demanding labor. It is rumored that some born within the deeper recesses of the Unterholm are cursed never to see the surface.
    • The Walls of Blairville- A magi-tech marvel, the Walls of Blairville are a massive, thinking artifact, tasked with forbidding entry save by those who pass through its front gate. A very, very rare few know about the Wall's mechanics, and fewer still know just how far the walls are willing to go in keeping to their collective programming to protect the people within.
    • The Pavilion of The Sun, Moon, and Seasons- Festival and parades are a part of Blairville culture, and the The Pavilion is the center of that culture. During the day, it forms the center of the town, but when parties are about, few can hardly comprehend the wondrous, exciting chaos that it plays host to.
    • Artifacture Tower- A massive, 14 story keep, roughly four blocks wide on all sides and made of ashen stone. Contained within are the acitivites of the mysterious organization known as Artifacture Unlimited, ho serve as opaque benefactors to the city. The only listed member of Artifacture is its owner and sole proprietor, Julius Aldoid. Julius is best known for coming to the aid of the city following the Arcantian assault.

Canonical Occurrences by Members:

  1. Gypsy Market - Dragon's Egg: Three individuals helped an old mobster's wife steal a dragon's egg, and caused a serious ruckus in the Gypsy Market which resulted in their ownership of the egg.
  2. The Sacking of a City: A legion of demons and creatures, headed by a warlord, arise from the marshland and march on Blaurg. The city is on high alert, having been struck with sorrow once too often, and rallies to defend itself. As quickly as they came, the army vanishes; the purpose for their feint remains unknown.
  3. Unlike Tower One: Events of the past that explain why Artifacture Tower was empty and the reason behind the 'disappearance' of Julius Aldoid and 'The League of Mages'.
  4. Artifacture Tower - Chapter One: Months after Julius Aldoid's disappearance from Valucre, Soren, a time-traveling Mage and his companion, Lunarius Maji, arrive in the emptied Artifacture Tower. Finding the fourteen-story keep empty of both life and activity, Soren and Lunarius claim the tower as their own. Taking Julius Aldoid's study and laboratory, Soren escorts Lunarius to a guest room before bidding her a good evening.
  5. Julius Aldoid and his employees and personnel vanish mysteriously and abruptly, leaving behind an empty tower.
  6. Blade Sweeping: Blaurg has been razed in a bold, daring move by the Arcantians of Altus Arcantium, located in Genesaris, in a decisive victory for the Arcantians in the Terrenus (Gaia) vs Genesaris (Altus Arcantium) war. Blaurg has suffered the most damage of any single town in the history of Terrenus beginning with Odin Haze's reign.
Available Quests:
  • lvl2: A gypsy has gone mad and is cursing anybody that wanders into her store. Find out what the cause is (has she been threatened? cursed? children kidnapped?) and put a stop to the chaos.
  • lvl2: Your character(s) wakes up in a dark, dank prison cell. S/he has been captured and must escape the Unterholm before an even worse fate befalls them.

Brief Summary of Lore:

  • Beginnings: The City of Blairville's charter was signed in the Second Great Unification, during a period known as The Times of Many. King Oros, ruler of an ancient nation predating Terrenus, had commissioned cartographer Erebus Langley to survey his land and make a map of it. The Langley Expedition is one of the great early stories in the nation's history and it was Langley himself who first discovered and recorded the supernatural effects of Terrenus's forests.
  • Pre-Crusade: Through most of its history, Blairville has been a city outside of Terran culture. Wedged between hills fringing the Wastelands and the Coconino Marsh, Blairville was often thought to be a backwater city and their trade was limited to Langley's Keep and Patia. Wet winters that gave way to monsoons and dry summers that gave way to drought gave the early settlers a rough time of claiming their stake. Blairville's outsider nature quickly attracted many mages and representatives of the arcane world, due to its ready access to materials mundane and illicit. The city also quickly became well-known for its artisan spirit, and the local booming sector of craftsmanship resulted in Blairville's growing fame and financial stability. True wealth did not come to the region until three major crops started to show up in national circulation- tea, spices, and sediments in the top soil. With these crops Blairville gained and continues to hold command of its own destiny. Independence and aloofness, more out of internal interests than external apathy, have been prevalent themes through much of its history.
  • The Crusades: The Battle of Western Plains was a decisive victory for the Imperialist Forces. Pagan Separatists held much of the town and it took 18 months to crack open Blairville's walls in a war of attrition. Even after entering the city, fighting was toe-to-toe for six months. The battle tore much of the town apart and it had remained a ghost town, functionally abandoned, for half a century, until its ruins eventually settled by the gypsies and mages that claim the town now.
  • Saturnia Regna: It is only in the last ten years that Blairville has once again entered into the national stage, its involvement encouraged by Odin Haze and the great respect he earned for himself and for the national government he represented by way of his selfless restoration efforts. It is notable as well that in the last thirty years before flying the Terran banner, Blairville was untouched by crime syndicates, malevolent warlocks and Hidden Devils. Blairville was a humble town, small compared to other cities but charming in that regard. Only recently has it returned to its proud heritage of artisanship and, though bustling, it is not yet the arcanopolis it once was.
  • Knock the Bottom out of the Sky: During a clear March day, Blairville was attacked by Arcantian forces. A single, massive airship covered in blades fell from the sky and razed a great portion of the city. Civil engineering damage reports indicate that a defense satellite, the northern Gaian church, and the largest local library were also destroyed despite none being in the path of the crashed airship and intelligence reports indicate that these locations were specific targets of Arcantian forces. It is difficult for historians to agree on a specific death-toll. Altus Arcantium reports suggest hundreds of thousands dead, while Terran estimates suggest a conservative ten thousand. Some theorists suggest that the disparity between the two reports is a result of propaganda, though it is unclear which side is engaging in the lie, and the destruction of census records in the targeted library make it hard to agree on a base number as well. Refugee camps spread out along the region and numerous subterranean developments sprang up within the foundations of the town.
  • Reconstruction: Terran Government contracted private arcane research and artifact company Artifacture Unlimited, due to the personal friendship between Odin haze and Julius Aldoid, a renowned philanthropist and local resident of the city. Rebuilding the city and its foundation took a single week, while planning and development stretched the affected quadrants of the city into a month of abandonment. Local merchants proved themselves a hospitable bunch, opening many of their warehouses and factories as temporary shelters for the displaced citizens and transplanar immigrants. Six weeks later citizens returned to their homes and the city lived once more.
  • A Vision for the Future: Shortly after the construction of Artifacture Tower and the revival of the League of Mages, some suggested that Blairville may have been entering a second golden age. Pressure from international relations, more deeply felt in the notably individual Blairville than in other cities of the federation, attributes to a great strain felt by the people. Currently the city resembles much of the Post-Crusades Blairville – a place filled with magical secrets, exotic people, and a thirst for wonder paralleled only by Hell's Gate's thirst for knowledge.

Valucre Blog Challenge!

Hey, I had one submission come in this week, a different sort of approach, but I liked it. An epic fight seen was the topic, but this one is more focused on the aftermath. Thank you for your submission (I forgot to get consent to credit, so I will leave this anon for now).

She was knelt next to his body, her knees caked in blood and mud. The wind picked at the curtain of her long black hair swaying gently at her elbow. Dirt smeared a cheek, parted by old tear trails. Shadows haunted her tender face. The light of her life was gone, pale, lifeless on the ground. His eyes stared unseeing at the sky where their spirits once danced with imagination. She shuttered as she covered his eyes and closed them to the world he once loved.

His sword was jammed in the soiled earth next to her. Without looking, she reached for it with one hand, grabbed it by the hilt, and pulled herself up to a wobbly stance. Her wounds were many, evident by the dents in her plate armor, but none cut deeper than the darkness filling her heart. An ugly gash oozed crimson blood over the curve of her breastplate. Bodies lay all around her. The wind shifted, filling her nose with the pungent smell of human excrement, charred flesh, and ash.

She turned her head to the battle raging on down the hill; black against white, ice versus fire. Dragons tore at each other in the skies above two clamoring armies of silver and gold. Her soft brown eyes reflected the flashes of metal. A single pristine tear leaked from her eye, streaking her cheek. She yanked his sword from the ground and glanced at the saber, then back at the battle, the carnage. Her eyes hardened to glowing slits as her lips formed a crooked smile. One word, spoken in the ancient tongue, left her split lips, sending a sonic boom through the field below.

New Challenge of the Week: Sometimes, a minor incident in a character's day is actually a metaphor for something much larger that is going on- a small conflict representing a greater struggle they are working to overcome. Write a short scene detailing a character first overcoming this minor conflict, and then having that moment of epiphany where they realize its parallels to their greater problem- and perhaps how they can overcome that as well.

Since we're losing blogs, just PM it to me! :)

New Members and Returns!

Welcome:

Nyriel:
Hi Nyriel! I’m Acies, site blogger. I’m glad to see you’re ready to dive right in here and start making something of your time on the site. Don’t mind your sloppiness, you can improve over time- no one will look down at you for trouble with the tenses (well, no one reasonable at least). Also- scraped up knees? That is a bit of an odd one, but hey, to each their own!

Mystiqueblaire:
Howdy Kayla, welcome to our little slice of heaven. I’m the guy who greets you via the blog- so greetings! Valucre is a great place to get your practicing in so you can improve, so I hope it pans out well for you!

Feadur:
The man from Slovenia, a country I had no idea where to find on a map and thus, to my great shame, I had to go look it up. Already making myself look like a stereotypical asshole American- great going Acies! Anyway, to make up for my ignorance of your countries location (as well as every other major detail of it >>) I am going to extend my warmest hello to you and give you wishes of a happy rping career!

Tenor:
Hallo Hallo Tenor, you did not give me much to go on in greeting you, so I kinda have to sit here and ramble on while trying to make it look like I wrote a suitable amount of content to pass as a decent enough greeting for the new member. You like how I can expand this out without really writing anything of relevance at all, thus making it look like I put much more effort into this than I was truly able to? That’s call bsing my friend, and you might see it in some the RP threads you plan on reading too! Anyway, hopefully you find some good reads not so stuffed up with fluff, so you can enjoy what is written. ;)

Harmoniel89:
Vicktoreya- that’s an interesting way to spell the name. I like unusual spellings though, as long as they don’t come off as corny :P. Anyway, glad to have you here and hope you do in find fact find that little niche for yourself where you can get a good group (of those two to three others) going in some fantastic RP. Sounds like you’ve been doing this for a while, so you know how it goes. Welcome to the site. ;)

The Ronin:
Hello back Mr. Ronin, I did in fact care to read what you wrote- and I bet you will find that lots of people do, believe it or not! Hell, as of the time I am checking this thread, 22 unique registered members checked out your thread- that’s some reading their partner. That all said, I return your  warm greetings with greetings (heated to a comfortable level of warmth as well) back to you and say I hope you have plenty of opportunity to kick off any rust you might have and get back into some enjoyable writing. :)

MrKrutiika:
Hey there, so what is a pseudo-newbie? Are you pretending to be newbie, or just falsely presented as one, or just an imitation? Inquiring minds must know!!! Anyway, welcome to Valucre, I see you are another refugee from Gaia. I say refugee because people come in here seeking decent role-play and well… they never go back- isn’t that something? Anyway, welcome to Valucre, have a fantastic stay!

Yummybiscuits :
Dude- your name is fucking hilarious and you have a bitchen avatar- welcome to Valucre, can we keep your forever? 0_0 Anyway, you too are a transplant from Gaia- been getting so many these days. Glad to have you, hope you enjoy the RP ;)

Ilaughatmyself:
Hey, what a coincidence, I spend a lot of time laughing at myself too- wouldn’t it figure? Of course, when you’re me, you either spend time laughing or else you start crying and crying is just unbecoming on a person my size, so I try to save some shred of dignity. Anyway, I hope you have a good and memorable stay here on Valucre!

Returns:

Nada!

This week, we got 9 new members and zero returns. The lack of returning folks is disappointing, but getting 9 new members is a good solid number and something I can appreciate!

Bah, these highlights, the deepest thorn in my side. Only for my love, my love of Valucre.

Yep, there is a section in your profile to write a blurb about yourself, but even better- link to your characters so that way someone else (or yourself even, I do this a lot) can click those links and look up your characters! Read about this Did You Know here, it gives you the details. Want more Did You Knows- go here.

Closing Thoughts?

There is an interesting thing about memories. Assuming that an experience was not one that was negative and had a scarring effect on you, you’ll find that as time goes on, you might remember it more fondly. Those days of younger years will become the good old days, and those good days you had will be something you cherish forever. It’s just the way our mind works- we choose to put a positive spin on the things we had done in the past versus what we are experiencing now- even if what we have now isn’t half bad. That’s nostalgia for you.

There is power in this though- it’s a way to keep you happy, to have something to reflect back on and feel good about. It’s something for you to look back on and make yourself feel better when times are a little rough, or something you can associate with other knowledge and then later get multiple parts of your brain firing off at once. This is a good thing- it’s exercise for the brain and it’ll help you keep those wits about you for a longer period of time (helps with thinking too).

Why am I bringing this up?

Well, we’re coming up on the holidays and in that holiday spirit, many of us enjoy the prospect of giving (at least, I am going to put aside some cynical biases to assume most people do >>) and look forward to Christmas for that very thing (or any other holiday you might celebrate at this time). Christmas is fun, I love giving, I love giving something to make other people happy, to show that I cared enough to pay attention to what they like and make a concerted effort to get them something they would enjoy.

However, this makes it easy to get lost in that materialistic side of things- the thinking about stuff. It’s not that we’re doing it because we’re truly trying to be materialistic so much as it is just easy to lose focus on that fixation. Hey, I want to make you happy and give you cool stuff, so I am going to get very concerned with what stuff I am getting. Stuff is nice- we get things we can use, things we like, things that might last quite a while or only a short while. We get excited when we see what other people have come up with for us and we appreciate that thought put into it.

However, there is a funny thing about stuff- most of the time, it is not going to last forever. Most of the time, we’re going to use it up eventually, or it will wear out, or maybe it was not as great as we once thought or it just loses its luster. We do this not just with gifts given to us but more often with things we buy for ourselves as well. Sure, sometimes, you make an investment you are happy with- a console, a computer, that guitar you have ached for- those have emotional/utilitarian ties. However, a lot of things though- we’re just purchasing stuff with only shallow meaning.

That shallowness just doesn’t hold up to the sands of time.

Now, let’s go back to memories. We tend to remember things more fondly than we might have even experienced it the first time around (hence, people thinking that old days were better when in reality, they probably weren’t much different) or if we did have a great time, we keep that. It is not something that can lose its luster because it’s captured the way we tucked it away, and any time we want to pull that back out and look at it again, it’s still going to be just as shiny and cool. It’s because that’s your memory, your thing to keep from here on out (short of something happening to your memory as a whole of course). There is plenty of research on this- experiences and making memories makes people significantly happier in the long-run than buying stuff.

Yep, that fun vacation is most likely going to be a far greater source of overall happiness for you than buying that new pair of shoes, or the newest Iphone (which you will have to replace in six months anyway, if you plan to stick with the most updated version ;P ), or some other physical good. When it comes down to it, we tend to derive the most long-term happiness not from the things we have attained but from the memory and experiences we have acquired.

I spent quite a bit of money getting two of us over to Jordan Con this last spring- and I have not regretted a second of that. I had a blast- and when I think back to it, I just feel fantastically happy I did it. And even though my car tried to blow up- going up to meet Rob and play him in some grueling airhockey and chess was something I will keep with me in my memories for long time- it was motivating enough to send me back up to Washington for a second time. Going to Big Bear with even more Valucreans- priceless as well. I don’t sweat the amount spent in making these trips possible- I just feel damn glad I did them.

The message I want everyone to take from this (not go to Jordan Con, although, that is a good secondary message ;)) is that when it comes down to it this season, even though you might be handing out actual gifts (I am), make sure you give the gift of good memories, both to those you love and yourself. Enjoy people’s company, have a good time, enjoy being in the moment and let those memories build up, so that way, a few months down the road, you can fondly look back at this holiday season and say- hey, that was a great time. I’m glad I got to spend it with those people I care about.

Especially for those of you who might be struggling too much this year to give some sort of cool material gift- give the gift of a good time, a happy memory, a moment to cherish- it doesn’t cost you a thing, except maybe a bit of your time. You don’t always need money for that.

[Unless of course you want to get out to candlestick park for the last 49ers game ever being played there, where legends were born and retired, but getting there is going to run you $600… then you might need money. But hey, you do the best you can. And hope someone out there just happens to have $600 they just planned on throwing away anyway. :P ]

In all seriousness though folks, I really do want you to have a great holiday season and make sure you have a wonderful experience. I’ll be seeing you all next week. ;)
