Synopsis:
It begins at dinner time at The Hotel Dupont outside Telerian City. Three recent murders inside the hotel have attracted several investigators to visit the scene of the crime: Arman, Henri the Ranger, Rampion Coronia the White Mage (with his Suirralrus familiar 'Persinette' who communicates telepathically with Rampion), and Tuck C. Dumasque the life insurance claim investigator. They join the guests of the hotel, Alexander the homosexual harp-playing Rose Bard, Miles J. Chatterly the political figure, Lily the hotel maid, Dalton Heath the young guest, Marcus Hildebrandt the old "Edgemaster", and Madame Belflor the proprieter of the hotel. After eating a dinner of pancakes and tea, they are all joined by Larko Malkog, a passerby.

A love triangle exists between the guests of the hotel: Dalton Heath is attracted to Lily, who is attracted to Alexander (to Mme. Belflor's dismay), who is attracted to Miles J. Chatterly.

Tuck C. Dumasque has come to determine whether one of the murder victims, Mr. Beige (NPC), is eligible for his life insurance claim.
