Valucre Presents
~Your Best New Member Finalists for 2013~
What do you feel like is your biggest accomplishment on Valucre this year?
I
can’t really choose a single thing – so I’ll say two! Helping Off
Topic flesh out Babylon, a subsidiary of The Dead and creating Denfell, a
province in Adaviel. Both projects have received tremendous response
and are continuing to develop and grow.
What was your favorite role-play (participated or an outside viewer)?
I’ll echo Refridgerator for current thread: Fete Ghede — Pale Libations. We’ve got a great group of writers (all of whom I’m excited to write with – including Fridge!) and I’m playing a corrupt Drug Lord, which echoes my main character, Lamont, who runs most of the drug trade in Terrenus.
For 2013 thread, definitely Welcome to Babylon [The Wayward Harlot]. It’s in Last Chance, and is currently a difficult read because a lot of the formatting is messed up. But it’s my favorite thread overall for several reasons: Off Topic devised several systems to keep track of locations within Babylon/The Harlot/Last Chance and we have 2-3 plots running through that thread. There’s a Dead mission where I kidnapped a famous doctor, Babylon exclusive plots, and negotiations with Pheobe Marshall.
What are your goals for the upcoming year? Any big plans? Areas you want to improve?
Outside of Val, I’m working on two novels. One is in a hiatus at ~130k words. I’m planning to excise a character from that piece, remove the last 20-30k words, and start from there. I’m also planning on doing an extensive rewrite of the first 100k words to make it a separate novel (the first of a series). The other novel is a project I’m working on as an independent study for school, so I get to meet with a published novelist/professor weekly and get feedback on what I write each week. I’m very excited about that.
On Valucre, I’ve got two or three major plots running that I want to wrap up and I want to improve the quality of my prose to match what I produce when I write on solo projects. I rush posts out too often, and I want to slow down and present my best.
If you got to be Supernal for a day, what would you do?
Respond to the RP he’s in with Bradapalooza >.>
Actually, I think Supernal is doing a great job – although I do wish the old bbcodes for tables were fixed.

What do you feel like is your biggest accomplishment on
Valucre this year?
This year, it’s too early to really say. If we are truly considering only this year, I would have to say it is the accomplishment of seeing to a particular aspect of character development for one of my characters, that being Kaori, a character I’m using with Suta in the Fighting the Sky roleplay. In that thread, I revealed something that I’ve been wanting to reveal since day one with the character. Audience aside, I’m proud of myself that I simply managed to reveal it as I did.
But really, that accomplishment pales in comparison to what I’ve accomplished on the site itself, so I’m going to cheat here. I feel that my biggest accomplishment on Valucre is becoming irritated and feeling overwhelmed. Because all of you suck? No. Because I can’t remember the last time I’ve been active in more than two roleplays, and despite therefore juggling them along with my busy life, there are few greater feelings than the accomplishment of seeing my name as a last poster over six roleplay threads at the front page of a board. Because that is an accomplishment shared with Valucre itself—the accomplishment of activity.
What was your favorite role-play (participated or an outside viewer)?
Honestly, due to limited time in my life, I don’t follow many roleplays that I’m not myself participating in. Which is a shame, but that’s a price of adulthood I guess. Not like the good old days… And I’ll run the risk of sounding arrogant here, but if I had to pick a favorite roleplay so far it would have to be between the entire Ask a Serial Killer roleplay and The Regent Kicks Back. I will go with The Regent Kicks Back, and not because it’s a nominee.
Both roleplays are among my favorites because of the sense of involvement I felt in either one. I’ve written short stories and have dabbled in novel attempts, so I know the enjoyment in writing by yourself, but one reason I partake in roleplay is of course because of the enjoyment I get in writing with others. Often, it’s the person you’re writing with who pulls you into a roleplay, and not the roleplay’s location, the background story, or even the characters. Because you could be using a character that barely has a basis, and yet your fellow roleplayer writes in such a way within this roleplay that they give your character personality that you never even expected.
That’s pretty much what happened in both of these roleplays. Off Topic was throwing stuff at me that I simply could not refrain from getting excited or getting creative. His replies more or less forced me to get involved with my own replies. To me, everything was so seamless in Ask a Serial Killer. I yet give my favorite to The Regent Kicks Back because, not only did Suta’s clear involvement in the roleplay mutually encourage my own involvement, but because I actually got so in touch with my character in the process. Kaori, my character, came to life in that roleplay. I came to know so much about her, and more about her with each reply. In that roleplay, everyone involved got me involved. If someone were to ask me what it means to roleplay, I’d direct them to The Regent Kicks Back—because it’s about telling a story with other people.
What are your goals for the upcoming year? Any big plans? Areas you want to improve?
I’m a firm believer in continuous improvement. There is never an area a person can’t improve in, and I always seek to improve. For some time now, I’ve been in the process of experimenting with different writing styles and techniques, and alongside improvements to my writing, I’m planning on experimenting with a few narrative styles here on Valucre. I always like to branch out.
As far as canon roleplay goes and such, I definitely want to dive into more stories with my characters (a total of 19). I want to meet new roleplayers IC and continue relationships with others. Continuing Ask a Serial Killer with Off Topic is at the top of my list. Beyond simple storytelling, however, I plan on ‘doing something big’ in Genesaris, ‘saying hi to an old friend’ in Terrenus, and attempting to revive my island expedition in Water Cooler, as well as the heist of Ashville.
I also want to fight.
If you got to be Supernal for a day, what would you do?
Change my avatar.
That and do something completely spontaneous (beyond changing my avatar). I would consider myself, what I do in my position on Valucre, maybe spend some time dissecting all my resources and responsibilities. This would allow me to see what I am doing and therefore to see what I can do. However, unlike my analysis, I would then spend only one single moment to detonate an explosion. Some kind of event for Terrenus that sucks everyone inside it. Something big. They really have no choice.
Cold Snap is still a great idea. But I’m thinking big. I’m thinking…I’m thinking I’m not Supernal. ( :

What do you feel like is your biggest accomplishment on Valucre this year?
My biggest accomplishment on Valucre? Hmm. I could say completing a quest (since that in itself is pretty hard to do). But I think that developing these characters that I have played before through rp has been a fairly big accomplishment. For example, when I created Chizuru, who is the Empress of a tiny colony on Vesia in Adaviel, I only thought of her as being a typical samurai-guardian type. No emotion, very stoic, but the more I played as her, she developed a range of emotions. I guess they say practice makes perfect, but I'm going to go with intensive character development as an accomplishment.
What was your favorite role-play (participated or an outside viewer)?
I would have to say that the Nightshade Empire plot was definitely one of my favorite rp's in 2013. I hope to see more of that plot when (if) DarkHeir returns. I had the opportunity to participate in two rp's in that plot. The first rp involved one of my more impressionable characters, Kallias. It was interesting to be a part of this transformation of a youth who was a little down-in-the-dumps to a young man that could easily become an assassin with his mind as his only weapon. The second involved Ether, my happy-go-lucky pixie. It started as her having candy and ended with her bolting out of Dougton. I've read a few of the other threads as well and loved what I read.
What are your goals for the upcoming year? Any big plans? Areas you want to improve?
Well, my main goal for next year is to actually give my Seelie fae characters a home. Sure, Lanternway is great and all, but they really do have a home. A home that is torn by war. I have a few random plots as well. I actually wish to continue gaining confidence in my ability to write and develop stories and characters. I'm still working on that.
If you got to be Supernal for a day, what would you do?
Two words: Panda Invasion.
I hope you're ready.

What do you feel like is your biggest accomplishment on Valucre this year?
The creation of Nich'e in Terrenus. For those who don't know, Nich'e is the monster metropolis underneath Terrenus that serves as a sort of alternative to the Underdark. I tried to challenge myself to stay away from Eurocentric or Tolkien-esque mythos, instead basing it heavily on ancient Pre-Islamic Arabian and Indian lore to make something unique that I could be proud of. It's a big project that's still in fairly early stages, but I've felt the most fulfillment working on it's lore and connecting it to the existing stories in the continent. The feedback I've gotten on the Undercity has been pretty great and I hope that it'll serve to inspire other players to explore Nich'e and help shape it's growth.
What was your favorite role-play (participated or an outside viewer)?
This is tough, because I really enjoyed a lot of the threads I participated in 2013. Sadly, I haven't done a lot of reading outside of that and I apologize for what I'm sure are really excellent threads out there.
My favorite role play at the moment wasn't a thread that was started in 2013: Fete Ghede — Pale Libations. Gabi put together a pretty wicked Orisian event and the people I'll soon be writing with are all bringing their A-game to the table. Seeing everyone put in crazy amounts of effort into the thread is really getting me psyched to play my character and I can only hope to live up to people's expectations.
(It also helps that it's crazy ridiculous horror stuff, which kind of touches my brain in all the right places.)
If I absolutely had to choose something from 2013, I would have to say HimJL's Return of the Tyrant. It was the first thread I posted in when I joined Valucre and the characters that were involved had a fantastic and comical dynamic that really made it an enjoyable experience. I know it's a bit sentimental, but having a great first experience like that on the forums really got me to stick around.
What are your goals for the upcoming year? Any big plans? Areas you want to improve?
Ultimately my goal is improving the experience for other Valucre members, whether it is by improving my own writing to make a better reading experience for them, creating a setting like Nich'e for other people to dabble in, or just working directly with staff to make sure that other members have the best fun they can have on the site. You guys have inspired me to drill to the heavens with my imagination, so I feel like it's only fair that I return the favor.
There are so many amazing story crafters on Valucre, some of who make me feel like my writing is crayon scribbles (coughthepalekingscough). They push me to deliver my best, even if it means staying up until 2 a.m. to edit a draft of my post or spend my free time writing the shit out of my lore. I know I haven't been here that long—less than six months, actually, so the "newbie's enchantment" might still be in effect—but I really see the potential that this site brings in nurturing new writers by looking at the way the it's influenced the older ones. The development of Nich'e has also inspired some really crazy colorful characters and role plays and it's been a delight seeing people actually getting inspiration from the setting I created. Seeing these people care so much about their characters and the insanely complex stories they come up with is a huge source of motivation for me to make things better for them.
I want to help make Valucre into a place that encourages people to not only have fun with their writing, but also to grow and foster friendships with other writers/role players. Through Valucre I've been able to meet some pretty badass people and forge fairly solid friendships during my short time here. Collaborating with these people gives me the most insane rush of creativity. I'm sure other users who have made friends here share similar experiences of staying up until the odd hours chatting passionately about ridiculously-awesome-shit-that-you-probably-won't-carry-out but it's fun to talk about it anyway.
In the end, if I one day ever have to say my goodbyes (though hopefully this won't be the case), I want to make sure that I leave this site at least ten times better than what it was when I first arrived. You guys deserve that much.
If you got to be Supernal for a day, what would you do?
Secretly change every member's title to Lawn Mower and change their profile pictures to a grassy landscape, then spend the rest of the day laughing my ass off as the tech support forum blows up.
